Part of our business sells ice cream in the summer to vacationers. Even with lines out the door some people insist on sampling ice cream. It's like they've never had ice cream before. Whenever I vacation to other areas and get ice cream I usually hang out and observe the store. I can't ever remember one time that I sampled ice cream and from observing a couple of stores it doesn't seem to happen nearly as much as our place.

If I'm at a local place with home made stuff, I usually ask the obligatory cute co-ed working the counter for a recommendation, and usually receive a spoonful as a sample. I then order some and leave a nice tip.

If it makes you feel any better, when I'm waiting in line for an ice cream and some jackass is treating it like a buffet. I hate the jack ass, not the owner.

I used to run three Carvel franchises and you would not believe the shit people will do to get 'free' ice cream.

My main store was in a very, VERY wealthy area and people would roll up in nice cars and try and haggle me down on a $1 scoop of ice cream.

We are in the hamptons. The customers are the same way. People wonder why we charge what we do, it's to make up for all the bullshit.

I actually had a guy try to fight me because I told him he was holding up the line. His wife ran out of the store with his kids. I guess he pulled stuff like this before.

When you cave in you build an expectation that they can walk over you every time. Tell them it's unsanitary to be slopping all over your counter and they have to buy it.

Exceptions can be made, of course. Profile, profile, profile. I know that's a scary word nowadays but it works. You see a potential ass then tell him/her hell no. You see a potential hot piece of ass, let her lick the ice cream off your stomach for all it matters. You catching my drift?

There is a local chain here that offers samples, so I do there, but not other places.  They have some really off the wall flavors so I think they try to keep people from ordering stuff they won't like.

I love Ice Cream

last year Ben & Jerry came out with a Mission to Marzipan this is now my absolute favorite in the world

I do like other like Rum Raisin, Cherry Garcia, Pistachio or plain old chocolate

When I go to a place that sell scoops I just go get what I like if they offer a sample sure I take it.

In St. Louis we have a place called Ted Drewes they have some great "Concretes" / Frozen Custard
