While reading this topic http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=75&t=800744 several posters said to disable the SSID broadcast.

I tried that a couple days ago. Seems I had to use the network ID and the network key code every time I needed to get on to the wireless network.

This is fine for me but no so fine for my wife and her laptop. She won't input the code every time she wants online.

If the SSID broadcast is shut off, is there a way to have the computers still seek out the wireless network and connect automatically?

I've seen some wireless drivers that won't automatically associate to an SSID that is not broadcasting, and I think Windows Vista does that, too. There should be an option/setting that you can enable to have the computer associate anyway. That is likely the issue you are having.

I'm not a big believer in turning off the SSID broadcast. Assuming that you have security enabled on the WAP, it really doesn't matter. Free utilities like NetStumbler can find non-broadcasting SSIDs pretty quickly if that WAP is in use.

Turning off SSID is useless against all but the weakest crackers. Use WPA with a strong password and don't worry.

WEP can be cracked in under a minute by automated tools so it's useless too.

I'm running WPA2, mac address code, a 63 character key and the router cannot be access by wireless.

I'm probably good.  Maybe the 10 year old hacker will go after the two WEP networks that are in my area.

Thanks

Thanks for the links.

I wasn't aware of a couple of the security tweaks
