Ok, I'm not an expert with cameras so bear with me.

What I think I want to do (heck, i don't even really know) is take a broken 700 stock I have, mount a long Weaver type base (or two, or three) to it and mount a riflescope/camera combo.

Where can I find & what kind of adaptors do I need?  Are most scope eye peices the same diameter & work with a basic 2" adaptor that they use with telescopes?  Then a "T" ring to attach it to the front of a 58mm threaded lense?

I think i have enough machinist skills to chop off an old Weaver base to make a mounting block for a camera if I can find the proper thread screw to use.  Then mount a remote control button to the side (thumb control) or cross ways through the stock (trigger finger).

If it matters, the camera is a Canon T1i with an assortment of lenses.

I really don't know anything about stacking lenses.  Can I use a telephoto lense with a scope?  Or just the basic 18-55mm?  Or, would it have to be my macro?

Does the same method also work for a spotting scope?

Any help will be appreciated.

So if I understand you want to mount a camera behind the scope looking through the scope and have this 'rig' on top of a broken Remy 700 stock.
Is this correct?

Well the easiest answer is the camera has a 1/4x20 female threaded hole on the bottom of the camera body.  This is standard for most all cameras & tripods.  I would get a Manfrotto quick release assembly.  Mount to the QR base to the stock & the QR plate to the camera.  Viola easy camera on & off with standard off the shelf parts.

The next easy answer is Canon & many other 3rd party manufactures make an electronic remote release to fire the camera.  Expect $25 to $50 for a wired remote release for your T1i.

As far as mounting a spotting scope, they also use the 1/4x20 thread mount just like the camera. If thats the case I would mount the scope like I would mount the camera, use the Manfrotto QR system.
Also it may be possible to mount the camera directly to the spotting scope.  If the spotting scope maker uses an interchangeable eyepiece & they have a 'scope to T-Mount' adapter.  If the spotting scope can take a T-Mount then buy a Canon EOS T-Mount adapter to mount the T1i directly to your spotting scope.  There will be issues to deal with; manual focus, manual preset exposure, super high magnification & difficulty holding steady w/o a rest and I'm sure there will be other issues I'm forgetting.

Now if your mounting the camera w/ its lens behind the rifle scope or spotting scope...well that there is another can of worms.  You could mount the camera behind a rifle scope & achieve that 'Hollywood' look of the cheesy sniper trying to shoot the unscrupulous dictator ...just gotta line up the camera behind the higher mounted scope-so the center of the camera is looking through the center of the scope-and manually focus the camera on the scope cross hairs & let the scope focus carry you to the target.

Where can I find & what kind of adaptors do I need? Adapt what to what? Are most scope eye peices the same diameter Yes & no, just depends, Nikon spotting scopes are pretty consistent but their rifle scopes will vary scope to scope. & work with a basic 2" adaptor I'm not familiar w/ a2" basic mount.  that they use with telescopes? Then a "T" ring Do you mean T-Mount? to attach it to the front of a 58mm threaded lense? T-Mounts usually mount to the camera body & have the standard 'T-Mount' male threads to screw into the T-Mountable scope or scope adapter.

Yes, take photos using a scope as the lens.  The 700 stock is cracked & not serviceable for use with a rifle and I figured that it would make a handy/braceable (Deer stand, Jeep window, hood of truck) platform that i can easily alter to fit the application.

Ok, that's a good start, now I know what kinds of questions to ask.

Like i said, I'm not a camera expert & don't really know a lot about it other than basic taking pictures.

Manfrotto quick release assembly, got it!.  Thanks!

I've seen the remote shutter releases at several places & the cost is minimal.

It does not really matter to me if I use rifle scopes or spotting scopes but I have multiple large objective/high magnification rifle scopes laying around the shop.

So, all I really need then would be a T-mount (I have seen advertisement for a mount with a 2" opening/sleeve for use with spotting scopes) then (for a lack of a better term) simply line the two up with the camera focal plane within the scope's eye releif?  I think I still have a grip on manual shutter speeds & setting f-stops from the good old 35mm days.

I guess it may be time for me to research a higher quality spotting scope with proper adaptors anyway.

Thanks man, this is getting me pointed in the right direction.
