I currently do not own a gun, let's start with that. I have used a hand gun at shooting ranges a few times and am a crap ass shot. I do a lot better with an M16 and some bolt action thingie that someone handed me once. I used to know what it was - forgive my ignorance. My husband works until late into the night which leaves me sitting at home alone with 2 babies and 2 incredibly stupid dogs. I feel like I am a statistic waiting to happen. It would only take someone a few days/nights of watching my house to realize I am a female alone. I live in an ok neighbourhood but lets face it, unless you live at mothering.com, there are bad people everywhere. So...recommendations please. I have 2 toddlers in the house that get into everything. I have no problem bringing a firearm into the house but how do I educate myself properly and keep everything safe guarded? I can't exactly ask an intruder to hold on a minute while I go get my gun and load it. My dogs...any dog can be stopped... so they're only going to be useful as a first alert. Any suggestions? TIA QUACK QUACK I posted this on the general - but I noticed while it gets plenty of views I am not getting responses.... so am reposting here to see if any of you ladies can help me out. |

Buy a weapon you feel comfortable with & take a NRA course to get as much information on the subject as you can. A shot gun makes a good quick defense, the sound of working the action, (putting a shell in the chamber) is an universal language. You only need to point it in the direction of your target, if all else has failed to stop an intruder and your life or the life of your family is threatened. With the proper training it should not be much of a problem to keep it secured from your children. There also is a wealth of information on this web site about weapons, their capabilities, and weapon safety. I understand the "being alone", mine works all night and I stay home. Living within a mile radius of a max prison, makes a person be slightly overprotective and suspicious of everyone all the time. |

Ah - I am within a 10 mile radius of a prison and a juvi detention. I did get a lot of great suggestions on the main board. A lot of suggestions for a shot gun. I need to educate myself more before I bring something into the house. So I will start by doing that. Thanks! Deb |
| I agree with what Annarchy told you. I don't have children, so I don't have to worry about keeping children from getting my guns, but a shotgun is a great defensive weapon. It is important to become familiar with whatever weapon that you choose. Good Luck. Let us know what you decide. |

As a first gun, I would also suggest a shotgun. You can get many good ones used without having to shell out a lot of money. Personally, I love pump shotguns for home defense. I think that you would be hard pressed to find a person, much less a criminal, who did NOT know the sound of a shotgun racking. Then, you could take the time to find a good handgun, whether it be pistol or revolver. Near where I live, there are at least 3 gun ranges that hold series of classes that range from beginner to advanced self/home defense tactics. Check out your local ranges, I'm sure you can find some who will be able to help you out in this. Let me know how it goes!! And....since I haven't seen you on before, welcome!!!! |
