| If you want good tactical Carbine training, go with Magpul Dynamics, Paul Howe, Pat Rogers or Larry Vickers. Period. |

'grats on the hot wife. anyways, me and my old lady will be taking some classes shortly. i've had a bit of formal pistol training a few years back, but she's had none and needs it for several reasons, the biggest being is that ME has a training requirement for its' CCW permit. ETA: i should add that my old lady is in medicine. she deals with a LOT of drug-seekers who are constantly calling and making threats because the practice has discharged them for getting scripts from mltiple doctors, or whatever. she's only 95 lbs. and it's only a matter of time until she runs into one of these disgruntled tweekers when she's out on lunch break. i want her to be prepared should things go from bad to worse. |
Thanks fellas. She is definately a keeper.
That is EXACTLY why I want my wife to take the class. I've trained her how to shoot thousands of rounds, but standing there taking your time to point, aim, breathe and slowly squeeze your trigger at a bullseye target isn't going to teach her how to shoot armed bad guys who are moving, dodging and most likely not wanting to get shot. |
|
Few pointers: 1. She could stand to grip her Glock higher. She'll likely find that she has better control of the weapon and will manage recoil better. Her support hand thumb should be over the top of the trigger guard, not down at the bottom of it. It's not doing her much good there. 2. If you are the guy in the bluejeans and you are performing a reload, you need to get the weapon back closer to your body. Attempting to insert a magazine when your arms are at almost full extension is needlessly complicating your life. Your support grip could also be moved up for best effect. 3. I'm assuming that in the pic where you have a magazine in your pinky that you are trying a tac load of some sort. It's a lot easier if you keep the magazines in your support hand. Look here. |
I imagine that he is performing a clearance of a double feed, as I was taught at Thunder Ranch. See here: Clearing a Doublefeed Is that no longer suggested as a good way to clear this malfunction? |
I've always been taught to keep the magazine in my left hand or to put it back in the mag holder. EDIT -- Some of my instructors have taught ditching the magazine altogether. |
Followed your link, and at the top of your page I got a "congratulations, you won" type banner. Only this one is making a bunch of chirping noises. Errrr. |
How would you rack the slide if your left hand is holding a magazine? |
Yeah, that was an annoying ad... |
what kind of gear are you using there? |
Definitely. Lots of folks struggle with grip, even people who aren't trying to shoot with french tips.
Ya, that's all my mistake for not paying attention. Bad moderator! No donut! |
That's how most of my instructors have been. If it works and you can repeat it under stress, then you're good. A lot of instructors won't bother to correct something they see a student doing proficiently unless it's FUBAR. If they see that you can do the pinky stash without trouble, they'll leave it alone and focus on other stuff. Everybody who has trained long enough will come across somebody who does it different than they were taught. Larry Vickers had to work darn hard to break me of some stuff I learned before showing up at his courses...and he's still got a fair bit more to beat out of me.

LOL I told her that I have no use for French Tips (did not know what they were called until today), but her reply is that she is still a woman regardless of how much I try to make her a tomboy.
I'm using a Safariland Holster with Blackwater Molle Padded Belt & Eagle Industries mag pouches.
Me: G34 with TRL LED Light, David Sevigny Competiton Sights, Lone Wolf Threaded Barrel Wife: G19 with Ameriglo Tactical Operator NS The rest were Glocks & two 1911. Two guys had G21SF. One of the G21SF broke an extractor. I have never seen a Glock fail until this weekend. Gotta be a fluke. Aside from that, there were no malfunctions except the ones that the instructors induced for us to learn how to clear.
I'm saving money to take the Paul Howe Carbine Instructor Course. I definately have a Larry Vickers class on my to-do list. |
GREAT pics and some good shooting.!! I'm not sure I could hit my own ass with a pistol. Fair with a rifle but have always been crappy with a pistol. 5sub |
You can't lose with PH or LAV. I'm scheduled to take 4 Vickers courses this summer. I'm going to have to whore myself out to some fat chicks to afford the ammo. |
| I just have a question and I may be way off here but if people are taking this course in order to buff up on skills for conceled carry, why are most of them wearing drop leg holster and molle gear? Not very practical for someone who is not in law enforcement or military. I would want to practice with EXACTLY what I would be carrying. Just my $.02 though! |
I'm MIL and Alan didn't have a holster so that's why he's using one that I loaned him. |
Ahhh I gotcha. Makes sense to me now! |

Great pics! Looks like fun. I wish I could talk my wife into attending a class with me. My only comment is during your "tactical reload" it looks like the mag is already out of the gun. Is that the case? I was trained if there are still rounds in the mag but you want to top it off with a fresh mag you first index the new mag, then extract the first one into the same hand with the second, insert the second, then put the first back into a pocket. The idea is that you don't want to run yourself dry when you don't have to. |
I still had a round in the chamber, but I let the mag drop freely as I inserted a fresh one. Even though I did not count how many round I had already expended, I knew that I had seven more targets that required two shots each. When I picked up my mag after the scenario, it only had one round left. Lucky guess. |
I guess it just depends. I find it easier, once you identify the double feed etc., lock the slide to the rear, pull the mag out and hold it with strong hand pinky, rack three times recover the mad, which is now right next to the mag well, rack once more and you are back up. |
