Anyone know of a good remote desktop program that's free and easy to use? I just don't know what to look for. Any ideas?

RDP is built in to XP and Vista.  Can you not use those?

There's Webex, CoPilot, GoToMyPC... but they are not free...

use the free option on www.logmein.com I use it to maintain my mother-in-law's laptop in MS, and my Mom's in Idaho. Also, I use it when I am at work, so I can start downloads, etc at home. What is nice, is you don't have to create any port forwards on your router, and you don't have to remember your IP address that your ISP gives you (which usually changes) The log me in client dials home and reports it's IP to their servers every time the computer is on, so you are always able to connect.

Do the machines have to be on a VPN?

Yeah, I got tired of using RDP connecting to my house, because of IPs etc. Also I can see at a glance what computers are on. Another thing that is nice, is my mother in law can see what I am doing on the screen, so she can learn over the phone, like I am there teaching her.

No. You need;
- XP Pro for the computer that you're going to log into
- A fixed IP address
- Router programmed for port forwarding
- Remote access enabled

I never could get the Windows version to work. I'm trying this LogMeIn program now. I'll see how that works.

You can be at ANY PC and control your own. Just goto the logmein site.

Hell, you can use logmein from your windows based cell phone and remote in. Was doing this last night screwing around. Works great

Note that VNC isn't considered very secure at all.   Pay versions of RealVNC offer an acceptable level of encryption, and I believe there are (non-supported) plugins for UltraVNC, but otherwise, you should tunnel it over ipsec, ssh, etc.

If you are going to use it for support use where someone is on the other end needing help then UVNC single click is the best. I have it setup for my business. Created the custom exe file and uploaded it to my site, then I direct the client to the URL and have them run it. Takes less than a minute to get connected to pretty much anyone's computer anywhere.

Nice. This is far easier than the reverse-VNC I always walk people through. Thanks!
