I've been making whole blood donations for years as often as I can and earlier this year the Red Cross asked me if I would consider making Platelet donations. If it can help someone, of course I would.

Platelet donations are easy to do. You have to go to a Red Cross facility and the donation process takes less than two hours. There is a serious shortage of Platelets now and I want to urge all fellow ARFDCommers to get out there and donate.

Only 5% of the US population donates to support the other 95%. Please do your part if you are an eligible donor. You can donate platelets every 7 days, up to 24 times in a year, and they have a shelf life of only 6 days.

Please call 1-800-RED-CROSS to set up a donation time.

Will they let you carry when you donate? If not, they can fuck off and die.

I'd love to be able to donate. But I was stationed in Europe back in the 80's and now I'm on the permanent ban list.

If you're going to donate, then do it at a local blood bank.

You're comment makes you sound like an asshole, since I'm sure you wouldn't refuse a life saving transfusion because of someone's carry policy.

That said, I have my carry piece and backup on me every time I donate. I've never asked them what their policy is, and concealed means concealed. Nobody knows I carry, which is exactly the way I want to keep it.

Never done platelets before but we have a blood drive every couple months at my work and they had me do a double unit of red blood cells last time.  First time doing that.  I figure if that's what they need, I'll do it.

It was a little weird how the machine takes your red blood and then pumps the plasma and platelets back in and it's clear.

There is another thread here in GD regarding carrying, the Red Cross, and donating. If you haven't read that thread, my comment doesn't entirely make sense.

I donate blood regularly, and my FIL donates platelets every two weeks.  Has been for about 10 years.

The only 'special' donation I've done is double red.  Usually it's just a regular donation.

Platelet donations are the same way. The blood comes out of one arm and it's run throu a machine that looks like a Dialysis machine, then everything but the platelets goes back into your other arm.

In terms of carrying while donating, I've never donated unarmed before. It's like anywhere else. If you don't announce you are carrying, and you have your handgun concealed as it should be anyway, the topic never comes up!

Diplomatic response there (except for the "sound like an asshole").
