Can anyone recommend a free ftp program? I don't want to use the crappy interface in IE.

Thanks.

SmartFTP. I use it, and it seems to work pretty good.

Sourceforge has FileZilla (the client) and FileZilla Server, for both ends of the affair. Free + open-source.
-------
I find that FTP really tends to conk out with huge files however. Like, up near 10 megs, but this might be partly related to one's connection speed (mine is only about 35Kb/sec up).

If you want to transfer HUGE files uninterrupted (or with automatic resume) then the easiest way is to use a P2P program like SoulSeek. But that's for "sharing a file between two private computers", it doesn't help any with FTP transactions.

I used to use CuteFTP and SmartFTP they both did the job. However one day I just decided to ftp://www.whateversiteimworkingon.com then entered the login and password via exploder and, since it worked fine, I havn't used any of the dedicated ftp software since.

Am I missing something? Is there a serious security issue doing things this way?

I would not use plain old FTP.  I would use scp or sftp.  Lately I use "pscp" from the author of putty (free ssh client).

I've been using filezilla as it seems to do everything and the interface is nice. for a simple ftp server to run on your home network assuming you're running a windows machine you may want to give typesoft a look.

Core FTP (www.coreftp.com) for Windows is good.  On Linux I use gFTP and on OS X I use RBrowser Lite.

For big downloads though, I use wget from a command line, on Linux, FreeBSD, and OS X.  I also use it on Windows since I install Cygwin on my XP boxen.

I use the old free version of WS_FTP.

I use SmartFTP, because it is free and they have a native 64bit client I can use.  The interface can be a little intimidating to a beginner.

Most browsers now have an FTP client built-in.
IE has for some number of years now, but these built-in ones don't necessarily give you all the options that a stand-alone one does.

You can enter an FTP address into just about any regular graphical browser now and it will connect. I have found that the Mozilla browsers tend not to refresh the connection properly however (they don't re-promt you for the username/password if you re-visit a FTP site). In this instance IE actually does work better than Mozilla.

...Opera I dunno about, who really uses Opera?

I used SmartFTP for years but got tired of constantly having to update it to inhibit the nagware component.

I'm using FileZilla now and have found it works just as well, maybe better.
