I'm poor so keep it around $30.

All it has to do is shine a light, that's it.

I don't need some crazy air craft aluminum case, or some crazy strike bezel for hitting people, or anything "tactical".

I just want a decent flashlight for shining light on things.

Second the LED Maglight. The AA one I've had for two years has taken a beating and still going strong.

Edit: Dammit man you beat me by 30 damn seconds! The post above has it nailed.

I have a bunch of those $3 LED lights from Amazon. Very bright, have not drained batteries, and have not let me down yet.

I have more expensive lights as well for emergencies and tactical/self defense that cost a lot more and I would be more comfortable betting my life on them.

If you seriously simply need it to shine a light on stuff pick up one of two of the $3 jobs and give it a go.

Convoy C8 with dedomed XM-L2 U2 1A LED for $24.50.

You'll need a quality 18650 li-ion cell and a decent li-ion charger, so add another $18 for those, but you'd have a nifty thrower for not a lot of cash.

What batteries you want to feed the light?  Do ya want it on a keychain?  Todays lights are unreal...you can get 60 or more lumens on just one aaa battery. Look at these few brands...fenix, streamlights, preon, shit...a nice cheap keychain is a tube light made by night ize, you charge it by usb cord...love those under 10 bucks and work real good. Light as hell and tough.

One thing to consider....get one that uses batteries that you will be able to find anywhere.

Next time you're at walmart, grab a streamlight stylus pro for under $20.

Streamlight Microstream. 35 lumens for 2 hours in a AAA battery. Great little light. About $18.

Some good advice in this thread.

For $30 I'd go with the led aa and d cell combo kit you can usually find on sale.

Have you ever even HEARD the phrase: 'You get what you pay for'? Buy a $3 flashlight, and you get a piece cheap Chinese CRAP.

I've got about a dozen of them and they do exactly what I want them to do.

Streamlight Microstream.

It isn't tactical, it isn't fancy, but I still won't go anywhere other than the shower or the pool without it.

It's $40, but look at the 4Sevens Mini MLR2.
It's my EDC (not tactical) flashlight for a lot of reasons.  Decent low, decent high, and tiny for the output.

I used this at work:

Extremely bright, very basic, built like a rock, 4AA...had mine 3 years haven't replaced batteries.  Cheap.
