I'm interested in starting martial arts training of some sort. I'm just dying for a reason to keep fit and a group of folks to do it with . . . martial arts seems to fit that perfectly. But I'm not really interested in just learning to dance. I really want to commit to something that will have real-world defensive benefits - how to really fight. Perhaps a school that can integrate weapons (AR's and pistols) eventually. What schools/styles would you guys recommend? What do I look for to find the right school? I live in the Richmond, Va area . . . are any of you involved in any schools in this area? Disconnector |
| Look for Full Contact Fighting/Mixed-Martial Arts schools in your area. Events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship were created to cut through the crap and show what fighting styles are the most effective. The best fighers train in what is known as MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, which is a combination of Boxing, Kickboxing, wresteling, and grappling. It is necessary to know how to react to all situations, both on your feet and on the ground. Do a internet search for Mixed Martial Arts or Full Contact Fighting schools in your area. |

Do realize that MMA competitions like with the UFC do have rules such as no eye gouging, no groin shots, no head kicks to a grounded opponent. Real life fights do not have these rules. Other than that MMA is a great discipline. Just don't worry about having a point deducted when you soccer kick someone's head during a real fight or finger rake their eyes. |
