So if a guy was going to build the ideal law enforcement live fire range, what would it include? Let's say for discussion purposes that this range would have to serve multiple agencies with around 400 or so sworn officers. What types of ranges and facilities are must have and what would be nice to have?
Obviously, I have some of my own ideas and preconceived notions, but I don't want to influence any of your responses. Let's brainstorm as if money was not a consideration (a guy can dream, can't he?). |

Range should have: Minimum 100 yards distance for shooter to target. -Each target position having the ability to turn left-right-center. -Several target positions grouped together, each to accommodate a moving target, slides left/right at variable speeds. -Ability to position reactive targets or paper target stands throughout the footprint of the shooting area. -Ability to position barricade or props to simulate cover throughout -Ability to drive/position vehicles on the range -Good ground covering that can be easily repaired in the event of errant shots, but also must not redirect projectiles or other junk back at the shooters. -Good lighting under all conditions. Also the ability to conduct range operations in darkness or with poor lighting. -Good communications system to provide directions to shooters. Also ability to communicate with range safety officers/instructors. -Ability to accomodate some areas to involve safe shooting into multiple directions. Classroom with the ability to provide protection from the elements and sounds of firing from the range. -Good seating and desk areas for paperwork/note taking. -Ability to present video/PowerPoint,etc Attached areas to provide for gun cleaning, ammunition issue, storage of paperwork and supplies, target replacement/repair. Loading/Unloading area to provide safety to those arriving/leaving from range training. Separate from the target range so that training of multiple classes at same time. Don't have to interrupt on class to make next class weapons safe. Secure area to store weapons and ammunition for period of time. Allows stuff to be shipped in for demonstrations or big events or just store weapons/ammo needed to support training. Office space for the paperwork that results from all this training. That's all I can think of right now. oh yeah, good physical security system (locks, entry codes) to include video so that when Agency#1 steals/destroys/damages Agency#2 property.....nothing turns out badly . Unless there is a permanent range guy to oversee everything going on.

100 yds? You are smoking crack. Granted, you do need a long range, but a min. range should be 50 and nothing more. How often do you shoot your pistol at 100yds? Since your eqpt. isn't stored on the range, that is way too much walking.
Find a good bullet trap system, moving targets, and plenty of eqpt. to adjust the range as needed. |

I'd also have a Hogans Alley type set up for both live fire and sims , classrooms, a DT area. If you have the room, put in a track for EVOC. Basically, replicate Blackwaters range facilities |

No crack needed. If you are doing your shooting at 25 yards, the firing line moves forward to the targets- moving back as needed for various distances. Your equipment may not be stored at the range, but if you put on a training class, the visitors need somewhere to park their stuff. Think about hosting a multiple day training course like FBI Chemical Agents class or instructor development schools. You host the class and usually get a few spots for your buddies for free. |
