What are the "ears" for on mag pouches? Standard milspec three magazine web belt pouch, all have two sort of tubular flap things with a snapped strap on the top edge, one on each side of the pouch. Former marine buddy can't remember what they are for, and curiosity is driving me nuts.

Why are they there and what are they used for?

I'm guessing you're talking about the ears on each side,  They are for grenades.  We don't use that style LBE anymore.  The current one is a vest with mag pouches built into the chest area.

Thank you very much, sir. Now I can cut them off without wondering what price I will pay down the road. They're extra weight, they're in the way, I don't have any grenades, and if I'm going to pay $200 per for the stamp, I'd rather have a thumper.

If I decide I need a few hand grenades, I'll find a place to put them, but space on the web belt is already tight.

Thanks again for the quick answer.
