Hi All,
I have a gaming PC that is starting to show its age. In fact, the HDD is ridiculously small. In any case, I have been getting back into PC games and playing some older titles I have missed, such as Medieval Total War 2. I went to install it and found out I do not have enough room. My HDD is 70GB (told you it was small). It shows 21.2GB available. I just reinstalled Windows XP less than six months ago. I have, now, one other game on it. I looked at my folder and added everything up. I am coming up around 10GB short. This totally sucks! I have ONE game on it (IL2) and it takes up 12GB as it is heavily modded. No pics or music to be found (not a lot anyway). No other large programs. Really no other programs at all. Any idea what it is, where it is, and how I can find it?? I do appreciate any help. Been looking at it all night and am out of ideas. |

Thanks! I ran disk defragmenter, is this not the same thing?
If it isn't too much trouble, could you please direct me to the disk cleanup. I did find some of, if not all, of the problem using ole' Google. If I understand correctly, my system restore had 'reserved' 12% (8.4GB if all the numbers are to be believed). I set it to 6% and voila! Created the space I needed. Will this harm my PC in anyway? I understand it will create fewer restore points but last I checked, I had a ton of them. Like several a day. Nonetheless, I would like to cleanup the disk if I know where to find it. |

start->accessories->system tools->disk cleanup.
And if you have Explorer set to show you all files, look in your c:\windows directory. You will see a bunch of subdirectories with names that start and end with "$", like so: $hf_mig$ $NTuninstallkb(numbers)$ You can delete all of those. And everything in c:\windows\temp. It may give you an error trying to delete some of the files in c:\windows\temp, don't worry about the errors. After that, empty your recycle bin. If hibernation is turned on, you can reclaim a small bit of space by disabling it and rebooting, hence getting rid of c:\hiberfil.sys. |

I have done a few things and got the space I needed. PC runs a lot better too. But, want to continue maintenance. Thanks again! |
