Here is what I'm looking to do.

I'm looking to do a NAS and looking for the best route.  I want to use a raid with 2 or 4 hard drives. I'm going to use raid 1( i think that's what its called) where is makes a mirror backup.  I currently use a dell poweredge400sc for my file server.  if i want to use it i will have to get a new case as it doesn't have room for 4 drives.  Will this server do the job i want? or should i just look at getting another one.  FYI this server was designed for 2000. Once i get this done i would like to be able to access this from anywhere to view pictures, video etc.  not sure if this part is possible with just 2000 or XP.  I was hoping not to invest to much money on new equipment aside from new hard drives

Once i move into my new house i will be streaming video from this server too to a media extender.  either another PC, x box or ps3.  not sure on that part just yet

And i know i can do everything with Microsoft homeserver, but i really don't want to invest that kind of money

google freenas and openfiler

either should be able to do what you are trying to do for free.

2000 pro makes a great little server
stick with it, the 400sc was a decent little server- Ive got a 600sc that just chugs along
the 600 has space for 4hdds, 1fdd, and 3 5.25 drives  what does yours have?  you can get bay converters to stick a couple hard drives in the 5.25 bays

i can fit 2 drives.. i have space for 2 5.25 drives too.  i was thinking i might go the 2000 route. might run it a little better than xp. xp runs slow but runs forever.. had it running over 400 days untill the power went out once night
