Systray has vanished from my start-up. How can I get it back, and why did it go away? I have win98, (I know) I will be purchasing a new machine soon. Thanks for any help.

Goto "START"
"RUN"
(type in) MSCONFIG
see if selective startup is checked, if so be sure there is a check in systray.

(more help if needed.)

I hate it when people pretend to be smart.

I worked Tech support / Warranty replacements on the phones for a major Computer Corp for 2 1/2 years.

You always start with the lowest common denominator and work your way up as you get a feel for the person on the other ends level of experience.

Yes. I also have to keep refreshing because the web pages will not open, I can download nothing, I have tried to reply to this post 3 times and cannot get it to go. Mark my words, this computer will be a target soon!

I've seen a system that had similar problems. He couldn't get to Control panel - it'd just wouldn't display it. Nor would anything work in the Run command line work, like MSCONFIG, etc...turned out that the system was really hosed with malware/trojans...needed a hard drive wipe and reinstall to get it working again.

Hopefully you won't have to resort to that. Have you run Adaware, Spybot S&D, and TrojanHunter yet? If not, get them (free downloads- google the names), and run them. Report back on what you find.

+1 on XP Pro.  Well worth it.

hmmm sounds like a Krugerware infestation.

Another victim of "Cool Web Search"

Backup any valuable data, cause you may have to nuke it. (write zeros, fdisk/format/reload)

Or Try WindowsBBS.com - there is a cool web search shredder fix, but I'm not up on the details.
