LEO guys I had a conversation with a local LEO in my town a few nights ago,we got on the topic of blades in vehicles and this is what he said to me "If I pulled you over and you had a large HUNTING/SURVIVAL I would take you to jail."
What you guys have to say? |

Belive it or not I keep it in there as a tool, paid off big time a few weeks ago. Tool as in a murder weapon, like a few weeks ago when you murdered Billy Bob? I get what you're saying, but it's just vague enough to be kinda suspicious. I don't think its illegal around here though. |
You think gun laws here in California are bad, you should try reading all the laws pertaining to knives.... !!!!! Although we have certain, specific State laws regarding knives, the local laws vary from the various city & county ordinances throughout the state......
For the most part though, if you had a large hunting knife in your truck, it would be no problem. But if you were carrying it concealed on your person, you could get into trouble. |

Essentially, it is okay in when associated with its activity but not other wise. It's okay to have a dive knife, huge or double edge or whatever, when diving, with one's scuba gear, but carrying it day to day and one could be in trouble. I get a little nervous when I'm carrying my dancing or ren fest swords, for their affairs, for they are illegal knives out in the open. As it was explained to me by a police chief, "What if they find a machete in the tool box of your pick up? Well, if you are on your farm or it has freshly cut plant material on it, they will probably let you go............................of course, if that freshly cut plant material happens to be hemp.........."

What you guys have to say? If the cop was serious, and would really do such a thing, ONLY because the knife was present, and ABSENT any other reasons/circumstances, I say he is the kind of cop who makes it tough on the rest of us. |

Agreed In my city you can pretty much carry everything but push button knives and and switchblades. Our harmful weapon ordinance allows leeway in the manner it's carried or your actions at the time so there can be charges but rarely happens for just carrying one in your car or on your pocket. |
| in Oregon, it has to be concealed on yer person...be a Dirk or Dagger (Double edged blade) or be swung into position by cetrifugal force or by spring. So without knowing yer states laws, it makes it hard to say yah or nay....I'd ask in yer HTF...gotta be some guys who know their laws or other local LEOs....or call yer local agency to ask an officer. |
|
In KY we have a concealed deadly WEAPONS permit, not a handgun permit or big stick permit...a concealed weapons permit. LEO might not like a big knife personally, but if you are observing the law and have a permit, he can not do squat. That being said, nothing to stop a noob cop from being uninformed on the subject and making a PITA situation for ya until you can straighten it out. But for the most part, the ones with some experience behind them won't give a crap about a law abiding citizen with any lawful items on or about his person unless you fit the description of a suspect they are looking for.
