I have a question for the cops on this board. Now that gas is getting really expensive, do your departments make you drive less, put two people in a car, or what? Or do they just eat the cost? Just curious. |
In Glendale, they announced stepped up enforcement today. Thats what got me wondering. |
|
On the military side we have been instructed to not use the vehicles when ever possible. That is easy to do on a tiny Guard base. I walk everywhere. I will have to ask the guys I am with down here from the active duty side if they have a similar directive. I have not heard anything similar from the civilian department that I work for part time for. |
Thanks, thats the kind of information I was looking for. Just wondering if they stopped driving as much as they could, stepped up enforcement to bring in more revenue or what. |
|
Not in LE but as a Firefighter. Our Chief has requested that we not do as much driving where possible. IE not making special trips to the grocery store, shopping, ect... We can still go, but we should go when we're already out. After a call or doing buisness out of the station. |
I was thinking I might start seeing more cops on bikes, but this is Arizona and being out in the heat for too long can be dangerous. Also, if the cops rode bicycles in the area where I work, they would probably be shot by gang members. So that limits their options some. BTW, isn't it hard to stop speeders on a bike?
|
I was kidding! By the way I am always accused of driving like grandma. Hey they may need the revenue, but they aren't getting it from me. Seriously though, we better stop this before we have a Slave1 of Truth.

Mine eats the cost. They don't like too many officers to double up (in spite of the obvious tactical advantages, and saving gas), because having more cars out creates the illusion of more cops. For awhile there was an order that you couldn't leave your car running while you weren't in it, but that's another one of those seldomly enforced rules. I believe this came out after Hurricane Katrina hit and there was a fear of gasoline shortage. |
I was once told, "This car can only do 130 mph... but this Motorola does 186,000 miles per second." ____ For those that were checking out the color of Mary Jane Rottencrotch's panties instead of paying attention in high school Physics, the speed of light (and radio) is, give or take a bit, 186,282.397 miles per second. |
Since they eat the cost, do they scrimp in other areas? Like no new equipment or something like that? |
| We're still in one-man cars. The only thing so far that has come down is that Officers who live outside of the county and have take home cars can't drive that far anynore. It was also announced that Offcers/positions that rate a take home car in the future can only have those cars if they live inside the city limits but the current Officers/positions are 'grandfathered'. |
| Up here in Michigan some of the the local government people are asking the Sherrif or Chief to implement a policy of at least an hour a shift walking as they think the officers are getting too pudgy.I saw a few myself that I figured it was the BP vest look but was cookies or burgers in excess with no vest on.......A good idea especially every time there is some major cop event in the media most of the ones with the police coats have a hard time running at all |

Sheriff's Dept here used to have unlimited use of their take home car in this county and could take it out of the county with prior approval for training or other business related to the job. The Sheriff here made them park the cars off duty 2 years ago. The worst part is that the car has always been pointed to as part of their salary and benefits and an excuse for not giving them a bigger raise, yet they haven't been compensated since the use of the cars was taken away. Funny, no one ever bitches about the County Highway Dept's take home trucks or the fuel they expend, or the garbage trucks, it's always the police accused of wasting fuel, yet people want increased patrols. |
You lost me there. How does that save gas or money? I could see them making you park your cars and have the dogs pull you around in a sled or something.

District Attorney: "I sincerely apologize" Colorado Springs Published 3 hour(s) ago Fourth Judicial District Attorney John Newsome told The Gazette that he apologizes for drinking nearly the equivalent of a 12-pack of beer, then driving a county-owned vehicle. Newsome has steadfastly refused to return phone calls from News First investigative reporter James Jarman. The Gazette reports Newsome said "I sincerely apologize for ever allowing myself to be placed in that situation where there's even a perception of wrongdoing," Newsome said. "Perception can be as damaging as actual wrongdoing ... even the appearance is a distraction for the office." Reporter Dennis Huspeni appeared on News First at 5 p.m. on Wednesday to talk about his conversation with Newsome. "I would definately say that he was embarassed that he let himself be put in such a situation where he was filmed like that and he admitted it was a distraction to the office and he wants to get back to prosecuting the crimes in El Paso and Teller Counties." Huspeni said Newsome is no longer attacking the report aired by News First at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Tuesday. No problems here |
