Why do they say not to store alcohol in them for a long period of time?

The metal actually changes the taste of the liquor.  Use the coated or plastic ones. You can also get gorilla glass flasks.

I have a couple metal flasks corroded inside.  Next one I buy will be glass or plastic.

we went to distillery last weekend and got a tour.  it is a small operation, and they use handmade copper tanks for the process.  they showed us how the copper reacts with the mash and the distillates (in a good way), but I imagine long term storage in any kind of metal would affect the chemical composition and the taste.

I have a pewter flask that was given to me as a gift many years ago.

It was bright silver but now over the years has taken on a tarnished patina.

I have never used it but right now the inside doesn't look like something I would want to drink from.
