Hey GD, question about FL CCW:
My wife and I have our NC CCW, but we are moving to FL this summer. As far as FL requirements, they require a CCW class similar to NC. Can't find the original class completion certificates that we took for our NC CCW. Has anyone here relocated to FL with a CCW from a reciprocal state? Did you have to retake the class or will a current CCW count as the class? We don't want to really retake the class (money and time... we go to the range every other week and carry everyday). And yes, going to call the FL DOJ tomorrow but figured I'd ask here in case anyone had any personal insight, thanks! |

Don't know if you do, but if you have a DD214 you don't need a class. I walked into a licensing office. Gave them a copy of my DD214 and a check, filled out a form on a computer there and a week later had my license. There are several offices throughout the state. Make an appointment. You can get your license within days instead of weeks. I haven't heard of you needing a FL specific class. |

I believe you have 6 3 months from when you become a permanent resident to get your CCW while your out of state CCW is still recognized. That is my belief as I understand the law,but I could be wrong. I also stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. For Those Moving into Florida: (3) If the resident of another state who is the holder of a valid license to carry a concealed weapon or concealed firearm issued in another state establishes legal residence in this state by: (a) Registering to vote; (b) Making a statement of domicile pursuant to s. 222.17; or (c) Filing for homestead tax exemption on property in this state, the license shall remain in effect for 90 days following the date on which the holder of the license establishes legal state residence. (4) This section applies only to nonresident concealed weapon or concealed firearm license holders from states that honor Florida concealed weapon or concealed firearm licenses. Places Off-Limits Even With A Permit/License |

I don't see why OP can't get a FL non resident permit now and then convert it later on. Unless FL doesn't do that for some reason.

FL doesn't seem to require training for Non residents. http://handgunlaw.us/states/florida.pdf Probably not gonna work seeing as he is moving here and will more than likely get a florida drivers license. |

I'm going to hitch hike a question on this thread - hope the OP doesn't mind.
I am thinking of applying for an FL non resident carry license, so that I can get reciprocity with Pennsylvania (Ohio and PA just can't seem to get on the same page about this ).
I was looking at some other gun forums and reading some threads, and in one of them someone posted this gem: "I don't think you can carry in the state of Florida with a Florida non resident carry license." Wait....what?!?
Full of shit, or what? |

FL doesn't seem to require training for Non residents. http://handgunlaw.us/states/florida.pdf Yes they do. It says in non-res section that you follow same exact process as resident only the notary is from your home state and you must submit paper fingerprint cards. FL non-res permits were really big for NJ residents bc PA used to accept them and you couldn't get a PA non-resident permit as a NJ citizen. Everyone I know with a FL non-res permit had to take a class |

Was that fairly recent? I was assured here on ARFCOM a few years back that they would honor a non resident permit. Just curious. |

I moved to Florida 6 months ago, they didn't care about my prior CCW , but they accepted my hunters safety courses as proof of training. My old state did not have a training requirement, so you may be good since NC did. Try to get copies of your old training certs, just in case. |

2013?
I think people started getting Utah permits but I believe they aren't accepted anymore. For a while, PA residents must have a LTCF, non-res from another state was invalid for residents. IIRC, they then extended to say non-resident permits were not accepted period |

Things where changed around 2013. ![]() Edit 2: Or get a PA non resident if you can find a county that will issue you one and mail it to you once it has been approved. It's bad enough you have to apply in person but to actually pick it up in person is a pain in the ass. |
