Lets say someone starts a thread with a question and gets an immediate correct answer in the first reply.

So he thanks the poster in the third post and goes on with what he was doing.

Why do 40+ other people feel it necessary to spend the rest of the day posting the same exact correct answer when its already been answered in the second post?

This makes very little sense to me.

People only read (part of) the first post. It's as simple as that.

Mostly because people only read the first post.  Pretty simple.
Also, some do it to show (through redundancy) that the second post (right answer) is correct, to basically add weight to the answer's accuracy.
