Many in the early 19th century died of this disease/epidemic.  What would we call this disease today?

Consumption is what they called Tuberculosis in the mid-late 1800s.  Doc Holliday died of "consumption".

I'm not sure if Tuberculosis was what they meant by "putrid fever".

Renamed, actually, "Putrid Fever" referred to Typhus and NOT Typhoid Fever. Typhoid Fever and Typhus are different diseases with similar symptoms.

I found an interesting site for OLD MEDICAL TERMS:  http://members.tripod.com/PearlsPad/Medical.htm
