My college has a WIFI network that is free and public but damned if I can connect to it now. I used to be able to and now it won't connect any more, just "waiting for the network" and then it cuts off and doesn't connect. Everyone else and their brother's sister's cousin can connect to it, but not me. What gives? My firewall is off. It shows up under available networks but just won't work. I'm running an HP Pavillion with Vista XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

can you connect to any other network?

if not, remove your wi-fi adapter and re-install.  or, maybe you want to check your TCP-IP settings first?

My guess is that since it doesn't use a password or wep key or whatever, vista is preventing you from connecting. I'm striking out looking for the KB article that walks through getting around this, though.

Yep, I can connect to any other network on the campus (individual rooms) or anywhere else for that matter. Strange isn't it?? The settings for the connection I can't access don't appear to be any different than any of the other networks. Also, my bad I am running XP, not Vista.

I usually keep my firewall off, so yes. Nothing other than Norton security wise.

Edit- Just futzed with Norton, apparently having "stealth block ports" checked causes issues with some wireless networks. Hopefully this fixes it, will have to see tommorrow.

For what it's worth, get rid of norton.

Use AVG or NOD32 for AV and Windows Defender / spybot search & destroy for malware.

Still not working, dammit! I've looked all through the Norton firewalls and even with BOTH the windows and norton walls turned off it still won't connect while the person next to me taps merrily away. Shit. Appreciate all the suggestions, am about at my wit's end for not being able to surf ARFCOM in the middle of class
