I understand that there was the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that ran from Sept 1994 through Sept 2004.  Also that there is a ban on civilian ownership of machine gun made after 1986.  I am confused by all the AR-15 pre-ban posts and advertisements I see.  With the FAWB past the sunset does it even matter if the rifle is pre ban or post ban?

The MG ban is not an ownership ban, just can't make new ones for private ownership.

There are states that still have AWB laws.

I think the pre- and post- tags have just stuck as an easy short hand for what features a gun has, or doesn't have.

Some states enacted non-sunsetting versions of the 1994 restrictions.  CA and NY for example.

Pre and post are for us losers in the states that cant have the fun toys.

We still need pre ban before 94 lower.

No, It doesnt have to be a made rifle.

I have never been bothered around this area about one except an old guy (FUDD) at a range. I dont rapid fire butto him I did.

sorry for posting in the wrong area. :(

I know you can still purchase pre-86 machine guns (and depending on my Christmas bonus I may end up with one).  I was more interested in possible feature on an AR-15 in Utah (yay Utah).  So I shouldn't have to worry about preban/postban.  In fact I think I will try and get one of the LE/Export only stamped ammo clips.   THanks for answering my newbie question. :D
