Every once in awhile, I wake up with a RIPPING headache, generally on the right side of my head, just behind and above the eye socket, for no apparent reason. I've always chalked it up to sleeping in an awkward position, with my neck bent wrong, or something. Anyone ever experience similar?
No alcohol was involved, so no, its not a hangover.

considering where you said it hurts, i would guess it is sinuses. Either a virus or allergies causing sinus congestion. Not congested, and I've never found anything specific that I'm allergic to. I've suspected that I have mild sleep apnea for a long time. Could that be it? |

Tension headaches to migraines due to a combo of things, dehydration, sinuses with allergies and shitty sleep position..
Got a new pillow I am still getting used to and it has helped quite a bit and have been getting outstanding sleep recently. Check out the sealy pillows they are like 30 bucks at jcpenny with a 2nd one for a buck. |

See a doctor. Also, have you been tested for glaucoma recently? And have you been visiting the dentist? Affirmative, no eye problems. On the letters chart, the nurse actually accused me of cheating.
An no, no dentistry for a long, long time, other than cleanings. And I haven't had one of those in some time, either. Quoted:
Allergies... sleeping position... Possibly dehydration. If you're not well hydrated when you go to sleep, then hours later you could be pretty dehydrated. That happens to me once in a while. I ruled that out... Drank nearly a half gallon of water before bed. Definitely not the issue. Quoted:
start exercising You take your logic, and your good advice, and you get the hell out of my thread, do you hear me?

Sinus rinse..... You should be able to pick one up at Walmart for around $10. Just use lukewarm water (body temp) NOT HOT OR COLD. I don't use one everyday, but it's allergy season, and I use one any time I have done yard work or wake up with dry sinuses. Best to see a doc, but trying this in the meantime won't hurt. |

You're probably really sawing away, and irritating the shit out of your soft palate. Get a sleep study. If you need a CPAP, don't be a dick about it, GET IT. Best thing I ever did, 9 years ago. I refuse to sleep without it now. I even took it into the hospital when I had surgery. Greatest thing going. |

What do you weigh, OP? That's a good question. To be on the safe side I'd go see a doctor. A headache that wakes you up can be a bad thing that you'll want addressed in a timely fashion. 6'3", just shy of 300lbs. I'm a lard-ass. I've been as low as 230 or so, but I spiked from 250 to where I am now when I went from working a real job outside to sitting in front of a desk. I need to make changes. Change is hard, though. |
| I’ve had these since I was a kid. This spring my Dr. put me on a drug called Gabapentin. It’s generally prescribed to epileptics I think. My headaches have decreased by eighty percent at least. I was having these 10-14 days per month and occasionally they’d last for days at a time. A scan of my head showed no internal sinus problems which surprised me. All these years I was eating handfuls of sinus meds for no reason. |

Gabapentin (Neurontin) and Topomax both work fairly well to prevent migraines, but Topomax has some annoying side effects. Not dangerous, just stuff like changing the way things taste and making it feel like there are spiderwebs all over your fingers. You get used to it, tho.
Neither of them does anything for the weird hangover headaches I get sometimes. Since I quit drinking 16 years ago, I'm pretty sure they aren't alcohol related. Might be dehydration, since that's part of what makes hangovers suck (or so I've heard). Has anyone said "tumor" yet? |

Quoted: Yup.Grinding your teeth in your sleep can cause some massive headaches. It can also do thousands of dollars in damage to your teeth. Go to a dentist and mention your headaches, so he can look for signs of bruxism. The dentist will try to talk you into a $200+ night guard, but you might get away with a $20 one from CVS if you can tolerate it (the OTC night guards are a bit bulkier than the custom fit ones). |

Gabapentin is prescribed for a lot of various ailments.....in my case for a pain syndrome...if you go in to the doctor, while your head is hurting, they often will give you an injection of Nubane (sp?), which works well with most headaches. I would see a doctor..but I definitely would not panic and think the worst, as some here on ARFCOM seem to encourage. Could be a minor issue, or it could be something requiring a more aggressive course of action. Either way good luck, and I hope all goes well for you. *this is not a professional medical opinion, and is not thereby recommended as a treatment, or suggestion of treatment for alleged ailment* -Private Contractor- |

One point about sleep apnea is that, if that's the issue, then it may be doubly hurting you. It seems to have the effect of making you fatigued and... bleh. Which leads you to gain weight and worsen the apnea.
But, you've gotta figure out what the problem is, so see a doc. |
