Spend a few years here watching the news cycle and you'll see the exposure deaths, mountain related deaths and glacier fed [aka cold ass] water deaths the first few weeks of warm. |
I’ll say I was n Oregon / Washington area at ft Lewis circa 1992, was there for 6 months with the shit assed 4/7 Ada who just relocated from dexheim Germany, our barracks was directly across the street from the ranger batt. Anyway….one Jan - feb night me n my buddy and 2 chicks we just met the day before at Taco Bell  tried to light a campfire with local wood at 1am…. Used fast food cartons, cardboard, whittled sticks, 2 lighters, in a light on and off rain etc. while using his Jeep to warm up between tries. Never got shit to light, everything wet as fuck, outside of logs / sticks, inside , underneath, everything fucking wet as shit, and 37* air temp, really sucked. I have zero doubt those Oregon / Washington woods will kill you quick if you’re not WELL prepared, mentally and gearing/ equipment too. We tried for a hour, never made fire, and a game warden came by, pulled us out of our make out sessions, eyed the two of us…..and the two roughed up girls in the Jeep, our sad pile of firewood and damp blankets….and said… “ look guys, I REALLY understand what your trying to accomplish here, I REALLY DO, and hate to say this to you…but… .take your girls and get the fuck out of here.”  Sad soldiers.

Well that's one or two fewer Subarus with OR plates that I'll have to put up with on Gifford roads  The Gifford is no joke. They never found that girl who wandered off naked from the Canyon Creek campground in 2013. It was cold and raining, how far could she have made it? It's also incredibly beautiful (see avatar). |

Sad soldiers. That ranger said the exact right thing. It took the shaking and the water soaked everything to convince me on using rental car minivan for heat. It wasn't raining. Water just soaked in from the sky. The fir trees looked water logged and were down all over the place. The night before a dense fog blotted all light. Never felt clausterphobia like that in Virginia mountains east coast mixed hardwoods. |

People who don't live in the mountains don't understand that the weather can turn to shit rapidly. My day bag has spare wool socks, sweater and hat. As well as a rain coat and gloves among other things. it rides with me in my truck every day October-May. |

About 10 years ago we went out to the Gifford in January for a one night camping trip with my GF and buddy. We hiked into a spot and set up camp. We tried like hell and could not get a fire going, I ended up hiking back to my truck and grabbed some ATF bottles, even after choking on that nasty smoke we never got a fire going Woke up to a couple inches of snow on the ground. That was a miserable trip
