I'm going to the PA shoot this Saturday and I think I'd like to have some sort of portable rifle rack.  Something made out of 2x4's which can freestand and hold about 6 rifles.  3 on each side.  It should be pretty easy to build but I'd like some ideas on the design.

Has anyone made something like this?  Show pics if you have made such a rack.

Thanks.

I don't have plans that I can post here but let's see if a thousand words can paint a picture.

Basically you're going to make a rectanglar frame with a second swinging portion that is shaped like a square "U" and surrounds the rectanglar frame on three sides. The top of the "U" is attached to the square frame with bolts, washers and nuts to allow it to swing out backwards and act as a support for the frame. The top bar of the frame is channeled with notches for your rifles.

The SGN sells these things from time to time so if you have one you might look at the picture. These things were made for use by the US Army at one time IIRC.

How about making two H-shaped frames with a 3/4" hole drilled thru the tops of each of the vertical bars of the H.  Run a short broomstick thru all 4 holes and then use a short length of chain to connect the two horizontal bars together so it doesnt collapse.  Bicycle hooks (like the kind used to hang the bike from the ceilling of your garage) could then be placed on the vertical bars, 3 pairs of hooks on each side, to hold 6 long guns or 12 handguns.

I didn't design these nor do I play a designer on TV but I did remember seeing them a few weeks back.  Use your imagination and these pics and you might like to build one of these.  It looks like it folds up suitcase style.

Rich314 posted this one.  Look under the canopy:

It folds to lay flat in the bed of my truck. Used a doorknob hole bit to get the circular holes in the rest crosspiece, then hacked out the straights in the "U" shape with a band saw.

Thanks everyone.

Ezra Coli,  That looks perfect.  I'll see if I can build one before this weekend.
