| Like the action in this film but honestly is platoon just a Anti war movie? |

Quoted: ..Some people say I'm the life of the party cause... I just watch it for entertainment, hell wasn't it supposed to be somewhat about what the director saw when he served in nam?! http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20095751,00.html Nearly every scene is either autobiographical or based on an event Stone knew to have taken place in Vietnam, yet Platoon is more than just authentic. It is, in Stone's words, "heightened reality," which is actually a pretty accurate description of the man himself. He says of the movie, "I pushed beyond the factual truth to the spiritual...no, to a greater truth. This is the spirit of what I saw happening." |

I've never seen a war movie that wasn't an anti war movie. An underlying message in all of them is that war sucks, and should be avoided at all cost. What makes my blood boil is movies with anti veteran themes. There's a shit ton of those, and Platoon is one of them. In fact, I've seen exactly one Vietnam war movie that didn't smear the U.S. military, and it's veterans. That was Hamburger Hill. My only beef with that movie, is that the patches on their uniforms were subdued. The 101st never used subdued patches in Vietnam. |

Platoon is and was a great movie that did a great job of conveying the everyday struggles that US soldiers faced, from the dull days followed by the absolute horrors of war. |

Platoon is and was a great movie that did a great job of conveying the everyday struggles that US soldiers faced, from the dull days followed by the absolute horrors of war. It portrayed the American soldier as a coward, a malingerer, a racist, a murderer, a rapist, and a drug addict. Certainly, there were individual acts that brought dishonor onto American troops, but Stone rolled them all into one platoon, intentionally. To miss the obvious, one would need to be intentionally obtuse. |

Platoon = all the worst things that happend during the Viet Nam War (and most others) all in a two hour movie: war crimes, rape, drug use, stupid 2nd Lieutenants, crazy/hard-assed Platoon Sergeant, murder, patrols, firebases being overrun, etc. It did give a vivid portrayl of what the VN may have been like. I'll leave it to real VN vets to give their opinions to the films authenticity. If asked, I can show my picture of me and Capt Dale Dye (retired). |

For better or worse, it is classic cinema. Not as classic as "full metal jacket," but definitely still a lot of good performances in that movie.
Dafoe is a personal favorite of mine. I have often wondered how widespread drug use was and is among soldiers in a high stress combat environment. |
|
I don't think its very anti-war. You do know OP that Oliver Stone did earn a Bronze Star with Combat V device????
Oliver Stone Wiki |
| I think it just varies on each vets person experience. My dad served from 65 to 70 and movies like Platoon used to piss him off big time. "That was not the Vietnam I knew " he used to say. Honestly we were soldiers was one of the few nam films he would always watch with a smile. |

| Meh...want to see a movie about a REAL platoon in Vietnam? The Anderson Platoon |

Oliver Stone was the son of a rich guy, he volunteered for Vietnam, cause he thought that getting out of it to go to college was a sham.
Yeah he portrayed junkies and potheads, rapists and brutal killers, but he portrayed heroes and artists and caring men also. It's called drama. While not realistic per se, it depicts a broad range of what he saw over there, and I never felt that it was derogatory to the soldier in general. |

IOW, it's all true, except for the stuff I made up. Stone is a POS.

My Ole man's favorites were always. 1.We Were Soldiers. 2.Siege Of Firebase Gloria He hated some of the Hollywood Nam films like FMJ, Platoon etc basically calling them Hollywood fiction. Now my dad was in the army core engineers. He enlisted in 65 and finished up his tour in West Germany due to family issues. Survived the Tet Offensive(Was stationed in Can Tho) And was even awarded a citation for bravery. I used to have talks with him about the Vietnam movies and his response was simple. Very few Hollywood films really got it right. Movies like Platoon showed aspects of the war I never saw and some I believe was 100% pure bullshit.
