I was doing my daily internetz surfing and came upon this:

I'd never seen anything like it and thought I'd share.  Anyone else got any interesting armor in current use with some sort of forces around the world?  This stuff looks pretty intense and I'd probably think twice before throwing a rock or bottle at these guys.  What with them probably concealing plasma rifles or something.

Holy hell, they look like some futuristic army run by an evil dictator. I wouldn't want to piss in their cheerios.

They look as scary as those glock 7's that are made of porcelain and AR15s that can shoot plains out of the sky!

Those police should wear clown outfits and hand out cookies and milk!

Ask Chairman Gonzalo and his Sendero Luminoso henchmen how badass the Peruvian Police are!

It's amazing how much of that stuff the less developed nations have to have.  Every time the natives get restless in most parts of the world the streets fill up with Robocops in full riot gear, water cannon trucks, noisy flash-bang trucks, acres of riot shields, tons of helmets and body armor, miles of riot batons, and a whole tire dump of rubber bullets.  They have it because they need it.  Of course, in places like Burma, they just shoot you with real bullets and be done with it.  The riots in Japan are fun to watch for the careful choreography of the rioters, but everywhere else the rocks and Molotavs are flying.

Makes you wonder where they store all that stuff and how they get it distributed when they need it.

Here's the Wiki page on the Japanese embassy hostage crisis.  I didn't quite recall it correctly, the operation was carried out by Peruvian military and not National Police and the terrorists were a splinter group of Shining Path, not Shining Path themselves.  Still was badass and I remember the news footage of Fujimori dancing and high-fiving the commandos in the courtyard of the compound afterwards.

After being held hostage for 126 days, the dignitaries were freed on 22 April 1997 in a raid by Peruvian Armed Forces commandos, during which one hostage, two commandos, and all the MRTA militants died. The operation was perceived by most Peruvians to be a great success, and it gained worldwide media attention. President Alberto Fujimori received much credit, for saving the lives of the hostages.

According to a Defense Intelligence Agency report, Fujimori personally ordered the commandos participating in the raid to "take no MRTA alive."

As the commandos tore down the flag of the MRTA that had been flying at the roof of the embassy, Fujimori joined some of the former hostages in singing the Peruvian national anthem.[11]. Peruvian TV also showed Fujimori striding among the dead terrorists; some of the bodies were mutilated.[12]Unconfirmed Reference (Ivan Montesinos?) Fujimori was famously photographed standing over the bodies of Nestor Cerpa and Roli Rojas on the main staircase of the residence, and Rojas' destroyed head is noticeable in the photograph. Shortly thereafter President Fujimori was seen riding through Lima in a bus carrying the freed hostages.

And people think GW Bush is too gung-ho.

They don't play around down in there - Chile, Peru, Argentina.

I remember the Carabineros de Chile (the Chilean National Police basically) are considered to be the most elite law enforcement group on the continent. Very professional, almost like the Mounties in Canada. THey kill people who try to bribe them

Tells you alot about how a country is treating their people when the riot police look like they are from a video game.

As often as rioters throw molotovs, I gotta wonder: just how flammable do you think those Robocop outfits are, and how quickly could you get out of one if it suddenly combusted?
