So whats the scoop on personal optics in the in the deployed marine corps?

If its an item in the marine corps inventory would is it ok to mount a personally owned optic or weapons sight, or can i expect to catch shit from the armorer?

What should I expect?

Could I wait till i get in country and we are BZO'ing and get away with it there?

The ACOG is nice and all, but I would much prefer an EOTech for the mission we got.

Your input is appreciated.

I can't speak for the Marines but I experienced no issues in the Army with persoanlly owed optics as long as I bought a civilian version of something in the Army inventory and zero'ed my weapon with it. If fo no other reason than it will pass the casual glance test by the powers that be. If it looks issue, they usually don't take a second look.

I use both- ACOG for daytime use and my eotech for night time use and raids... swap between them with larue mounts (yes i put my issue ACOG on a laure mount)....

Haven't had any problems except from the Bn Gunner who said that my eotech was the "Exact wrong sight for the fight that we're in"

whatever

+1

We were all issued Aimpoints and once we got in theater, we had 6 ACOG's to dish out.  5 to the squads and 1 to guess who, our CO.

We had one or two guys send their Eotechs from home and our CO couldnt have cared less.  He just wanted to play with them first.

No issues here, only thing you might have a problem with are actual weapons components (uppers and the like.)

I was worried about this very thing. As a door gunner, I was issued a 240H and an M16A2. Well I wanted an M4 so I brought my own upper/stock/rails, and ACOG too.

I ended up putting it in a unipac and had it shipped home last month. It is already there. Only problem is now I have to lug my M16A2 around for one more week.

I never fired my M4 at the enemy, but shot my 240H all the time. I am still glad that I will have basically the weapon that I carried in combat (minus the lower) when I get home to pass on to my Son.

I did the same thing only I fired my BM M4 upper a lot. I hand carried it home in a SAW spare barrel bag. Customs didn't bat an eye. I bought a BM lower when I got back and now I have a 90% replica of the gun I carried in combat.

I still have the aimpoint given to me by a member here and a few boxes of MK262 ammo.

Damn, I wish I would have gotten an Aimpoint for free

But as you all know, a deployment is full of freebies, some you want and some you don't. I managed to scarf up an AK drum that had been taken off a detainee that we transported once. Not really though. That would have been nice if I could have done that..........

Ask up your chain of command and see how they feel about the idea of you bringing an Aimpoint or Acog.

It can't hurt to ask.

It really depends, unit to unit.

as far as switching out for mission type that seems really off to me.  My ao is so diverse that I really need to be ready for anything at any given time.  Large areas of farm land and large urban areas as well.  I carry a personally owned acog w/ doc optic red dot.  I love the thing and it would be damn hard for some one to make me part with it over here.  Alot of my buddies also carry the leupold cq/t allowing for both minor zoom and red dot.  I had problems getting mine on in the begining not from the company level but the platoon level old ranger who believed that army gear is a gift from god.  but he is gone and the scope is here.

I'll clear that up...

When I know I'm going on a raid- urban patrols at night that sort of thing I'll mount my EOTech- I usually have my ACOG on there, and I carry both with me all the time. If it's needed it can be put on...

I was wondering this too...as Im not very fond of having a fixed 4x Acog. Im personally partial to my aimpoint but magnification does have its benefits and Im leaning towards possibly getting a S/B short dot.

Speaking as an Army guy, just zeroed my TA 33-8 & nobody gives me any grief about it... I keep a scopecoat on it when on the FOB & nobody seems to notice it.

I used a personal purchase EoTech on a goose-neck mount for an A2 on my first trip as nothing was issued to me.  This time I have a new M4 and it has the CCO so I will probably just run with it this time.

i use my own ACOG over here, we got some but only about 6 for the company and they all went to bigshots. ive seen a tank company here where a bunch of guys ordered custom SPR uppers from MSTN.  its all about commanders discretion.

as stated earlier, you can walk past customs with about anything in your hands provided it looks like a US military issue weapon.

Nick,

Ya'll are working the AO ya took over from 2BCT 4ID, right?  The old chemical plant?  When we were there, guys in my platoon swore by the ACOG.  And while I never got optics for my M14, I had an ACOG on my M4 that I liked so much, I bought one when I got home.  But the one I own now is a TA-01NSN with the DO red dot set up.  Would have prefered a TA31-M4, but I'm happy with the 01.

And from what I'm hearing, we might be crossing paths soon.
