What is your dept policy on accesories like optics/lights on patrol rifles?
Is there a difference in policy between personally owned rifles and dept. issue rifles?

My Chief says if you can qualify with it, you can carry it.

We had glass, but a few years ago admin decided they didn't want us road warriors thinking we were snipers... so we are IS only.  There is currently a large pile of ACOGS rotting on a shelf in the armory.

If you qualified before the policy change, your optics were grandfathered in.

Same as Bama-Shooter here. If you can qualify with the optic, you can carry it.

We USED to be "if you can qualify, you can carry" but people were using POS glass optics and would have to re-zero every time quals came around. Brass decided (as they usually do) to get rid of everything instead of fixing the problem at hand. So it's now irons only (unless you're a favored child or a SWAT dog). I fought hard for them to make it specific reliable brands/styles, but they could not be reasoned with.

Dept policy mandates light, mag pouch and buis if you have optics.  You can mount optics on dept rifle if you don't alter it (cut off carry handle).  Optics have to be rugged like what military uses (aimpoint, eotech, acogs) and no more than 4x.  Optics are actually encouraged due to the fact that irons are pretty useless in darkness/low light.  Hope that helps.

I can't tell you how many times I said that and they still didn't listen.

...give you fifty bucks a piece for your unwanted ACOGS............................

That's a shame. We use 4x32 ACOGS with the LAPD tritium reticule, zeroed at 100m and they are very good. On top is a Docter dot sight zeroed to 25m for close up work. Surefires(old ones) for lights, but they work ok.

With the stats being that most shootings take place at night, I don't understand how dept. admins could not allow optics.

At least you guys get patrol rifles...we still have SMGs and shotguns with no slugs.  No lights, optics, etc...

Some special people get M-4s with an ACOG but you could go an entire career and never end up being issued one...

Sometimes the echelons above reality make decisions that I just can't figure out.

I have been trying to get the range to re-issue or liquidate those things.

TA31DOCs issued?  Must be nice.

We can have just about any accessory on the rifle. Optic are allowed but you must be able to use your IS as well. This is a back-up in case your optic goes down (batteries die etc) you have to be able to immediately use your IS.

Aimpoint, Eotech, and reflex (also LaRue Irondot, Burris Speed dot, etc.) are GTG, no magnification allowed. White lights are encouraged, and Officers are taught how to use handheld lights, just in case their mounted light goes down, or they don't have one mounted. All rifles/carbines are private purchase, with reasonable guidlines.

We are limited for brand of optic and there is no magnification for the optic allowed. Of course, the loop hole is the aimpoint magnifier

Any light on the weapon is fine.

I wish my dept. policy was like yours.  Admin won't allow glass or lights  on our rifles.  Doesn't make sense to me...

No scopes, red dot types only, & any type of flashlight is allowed.  Must qualify with both IS & RD & they must co-witness.  A sling of some type is mandatory also.
