This fall I'm starting a graduate program in electrical engineering, and I'll very likely use Matlab, or Mathematica, or both.
If you were buying a new machine to use them on, how much RAM would you want? I suppose this may depend to a large extent on the extensions and toolkits used, e.g. Simulink/Signal Processing Toolbox et al for Matlab, but I don't have a feel for how much RAM is "enough." The office workstations we used at my last job only ran Windows XP, so we were limited to 4 GB of usable RAM. But, I can't remember ever running out. I seem to recall the CPU being the larger limiting factor. |
