Attached File Last month my grands were swimming in our backyard. Grandson #3, a tall, lanky 14 year old, stepped into the pool onto the top of the built in table with a stone top. Of course it's been ingrained into them that is not a correct pool entry, but they have to learn the hard way. Anyway, I'm watching them and see the stone top break in 2 as Braxton is stepping on it. He fell onto the table and into the pool. I knew immediately that it was going to be serious and yelled at Mrs TB to call 911. He started screaming as his big brother picked him up and placed him on the side of the pool and noticed a 10 inch radial cut starting about 3 inches below his kneecap and continued anteriorly around to the calf of his left leg. It was down to the bone, and was 2 inches wide. It was bleeding a lot, but not gushing or pulsing or pooling. I ran back inside and grabbed my IFAK and applied a 6 inch Israeli pressure bandage. He had surgery and is off crutches today. Healing up nicely. Youth, right? I since have put together 7 kits with. Nunuk 904 plastic first aid case 1/ 4" and 1/ 6" Israeli Bandage Celox Gauze Wound Packing Gauze Emergency Shears Cat Tourniquet SWAT T Tourniquet 2 Chest Seals Vented 1/ 2" and 1/ 1" rolls of Med Tape I told my kids that these are Bleed Kits, not boo boo kits. If they want to add a few band aids and extra gauze, thats fine. But do not over complicate it. The receive the kit after the attend a stop the bleed course, along with the grands too, of course. Suggestions, criticisms? Attached File Still waiting on stuff. But, you get the idea. |

OP - glad the grankid is doing better. Based on your description, I'm surprised he didn't hit an artery. I recall one 'stop the bleed' course i took, the question of when to use a tourniquet vs an IBD came up. The short response was, if you think to yourself damn that looks bad vs fuuuuck that's bad you have your answer. as for the kits, i would say add a sharpie to write on the person with. |

Add Mylar "space" blankets to the kits. Keeping people warm after major blood loss is medically important. There's been some good studies on trauma victims who feel cold (which is VERY common after a major trauma injury), do not clot as well, which leads to worse medical outcomes. |

I would disagree on that. Worse case scenario, you can shove a roll of gauze under a CAT to occlude the artery. |

I had no idea what you were talking about in the OP but now it makes sense haha. Good reminder too. I first heard about the class through this website, and took the online portion a few months ago. I really need to find an in person class and take that as well, but I learned quite a bit from the online version. I have a bunch of kids and a 35 minute drive to the nearest hospital if there’s no traffic, so it seems important to know. I need to put together a kit like yours too, I like that. I don’t have everything I need yet, trying to get stuff here and there as money allows, but I like the idea of having everything in a nice bright red box that you can grab and go, instead of fumbling around. |

There was a thread recently on this subject, first aide A member said they'd taken a great course (same city as me) and I subscribed so that I could research the course. I assume the thread went to archive, I can't find it What organization typically holds these classes? ETA: I'd like to do an in person, hands on course |

I took a emergency med course and liked it enough to send my wife to another one, then took it upon myself to organize a second class for a different group of people, which I also re-took, then I attended a basic CPR class. I hope to re-do these at least annually and also hope to never have to use them. I do carry a fairly extensive IFAK now too. GOOD ON YOU, OP for having the skills and equipment to sort your grandson out. |

In my area, fire departments and hospital emergency departments usually sponsor them. Mine was free through a hospital ED. Their grant also had them giving out free CATs to everyone who did an in-person check off. Can't argue with a price like that. |

Thanks for sharing OP. Glad everything worked out on your end. I've been meaning to do this course for awhile so I finally got around to the search and nearest course was 50mi away. With the 2 nearest sites 50mi southeast and 60 mi northwest seems I'm sitting in a pretty nice sized gap. I emailed them to see about hosting a course at my business. Will be interesting to see what options are out there to host. |

STB is not all that involved and paying $75 to drive 30 minutes and sit in a classroom for 4 hours to learn how to apply a tourniquet, pack a wound, and apply an israeli bandage was not exactly worth it. The material covered is incredibly basic |
