I’ve covered this recently in a ground wasp related thread. Without my IR to light the entrance hole, my night attack would have failed. I emmitted those stinging bastards straight to hell… Attached File |

I've seen plenty of areas that were too dark for NODs. Shadows exist under moonlight/starlight too. Indoors especially. Mixed lighting can be even worse: bright spots autogate the NODs, so they can't see into the darker areas. NV without an IR illuminator is like twilight without a white light. Sure, don't illuminate if you don't need to, but sometimes you need to locate or PID a target. |

It's day eleven of the Apocalypse. You've escaped into the hills with your supplies, and are crouching in some bushes watching with your passive illumination equipped KAC and NODs to see if you've been followed. Nobody could spot your ghillie suit from this hide. All of a sudden you see a blinding light! It came from farther than you expected, farther than your passive reaches. There's a sharp pain in your your eye sockets and you flinch giving away your position. The TulAmmo FMJ spray and pray burst tears it's way through your hide and you. You've been hit by Boogaloo Bob, with his UTG decked out PSA and a simple high candela wml. You feel the wet heat as he looms inches from your face, dropping crumbs on the ground all around you. His voice creaks with moistness. 'White light emission' he whispers, stepping over your body as everything fades to black. He reaches out for your weapon with his Cheeto stained fingers. The last thing you feel - his NCSTAR sling gliding over your face. |

Short range, sure. But shooting stuff at 500+m with a long range clip on even with an unfilmed 2500+ FOM tube with 0% moon and cloudy skies is impossible without illuminating something. Sometimes it’s a necessary evil. |

I use / used a PEQ15 all the time both in combat and shooting on a flat range - miraculously I’m still alive. ETA: it’s not the tool it’s the training and discipline to use it appropriately. |

I like my OG PEQ2 for having the ability to illum sparingly as required. While its plastic housing may not be the most robust available I'm a big fan of the illuminators brightness and ease of adjustment. 20 years ago I'd use the pointer more, but rarely if ever these days. Passive aiming is where it's at for most anything I'd need to deal with. Pointer use is still an arrow in the quiver if the circumstances dictate it's use. |
