So I've purchased a few things from them and they've always been great...
I see they have a belt that I want, so I purchase it last night. I get an email today saying the item isn't actually in stock and they hope to get another in a week or so... Why would they list an item in stock if it's actually backordered? LAME! |

They did the same thing to me 2 years ago at Christmas. I ordered a light for my dad, it was backordered. I waited and waited, finally sent them an email asking for a new ETA. Turns out they didn't know if they were going to get anymore for 6 months! For a Streamlight! So I cancelled, paid $5 more and ordered it from someone who had it in stock. It shipped the same day.
I have no problems backordering, provided I am aware that the item is not in stock. Don't let me pay, then tell me it isn't there. |
| I had the same problem with a scope I had ordered. They kept telling me we are expecting a shipment of them in less than 2 weeks. The date kept being pushed back, until they finally told me that Bushnell wasn't producing them anymore. I didn't appreciate being told several times that they had a shipment of them coming in, when Bushnell had stopped production of them. |

I ordered something from them as an Xmas gift, it wasn't in stock, they had it restocked and shipped to my house before the holiday, even after the restock date was pushed back a week. I made sure to keep calling them every few days to check on order status.
Patience is a virtue. |
| LOL, I ordered three items all showing in stock about 2 weeks ago. Next day they email and tell me that two items are out of stock and my order is on hold. A week later they email me and tell me all three items are out of stock and they should be back in stock in a few days. Nothing yet. You would think they would have held the one item in stock for me until the rest came in, but no. Full of fail. |

Most of the on-line retailers "drop-ship" product. That means they (the on-line retailer) takes the order from the customer (and the customer's money); then they order from the actual distributor/manufacturer. The actual distributor/manufacturer does the actual shipping. Not actually having to hold inventory is another way of the on-line retailers to reduce their costs of doing business. This is how they offer lower prices than brick and mortar stores. So, if the distributor/manufacturer doesn't update what's in stock to their customers, in this example, Optics Planet didn't they were out of stock until they ordered the product to be drop shipped. Hope this helps. |

They just did the same thing to me a couple of weeks ago on some Maxpedition gear I ordered. I canceled my order when I got the out of stock email. Waited 6 weeks after ordering my Kodiak Gearslinger. Called twice during that time. Each time they said "oh it looks like we are getting another shipment in a few days." Waited another two weeks. Canceled order and ordered from a smaller company that shipped the same day. I am patient but not that patient.

They really don't stock all the holsters they advertise.
I tried to order a Bianchi holster for a 3" GP100 last year. Got an email saying it was out of stock, waiting time was 3 to 4 weeks. So I requested a similar holster, same story 3 to 4 weeks. Basically, it was an oddball. They didn't stock it and when they got an order for, they placed an order with the manufacturer. From a small business standpoint, I can't blame them for doing it, but it's seems only fair upfront to let the customer know you really don't have it. They wasted a lot of my time. I'm sure they stock some of their popular stuff, I'd just like to know before ordering. |
| I had good results from Opticsplanet. A little slow on shipping though. I think theyare kind of a "drop ship" company. They don't actually stock much more than some optics stuff. So their inventory status depends on the distibutors' stock. After you order. If that makes sense. |

I had to wait 3 months for a Surefire light mount.
They sell stuff that they don't actually have in stock. This is a pattern with OpticsPlanet. That makes it not a mistake, but business as usual. I'll never buy from them again. OpticsPlanet can suck a bag of wangs. |

I can think of multiple reasons: 1) Inventory isn't updated quick enough for web users/web site. 2) They don't keep said item in the same physical location as most of their other stuff, i.e. it fell thru the cracks. 3) Software issue prevented accurate inventory level replenishment being shown/used. I've ordered from them several times & ALWAYS got 1st class service & product, FWIW. My .o2 |

I've had stuff not in-stock with them, and orders that shipped out the next day. At the very least, they are always helpful and never give me grief about canceling an order like other places.
As far as just being a dropshipper, their About Us video shows their warehouse and their shipping team. I'm sure they do dropship some stuff, but doesn't everyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja6gvD80-6Y And as far as not having any shooters on staff, one of the sales guys there runs a blog. I've dealt with him, the guy knows his shit and won't BS you. Check it out and tell me he doesn't shoot? http://www.riflescopeblog.com I still haven't found the perfect online company, but OpticsPlanet has at least been good to me. I'm sure some of the complaints in this thread are valid, but other ones are just exaggerated BS :D |
