I've never seen this movie discussed here (maybe I just missed it) but it seems like the ideal ARFCOM movie. It has: An end of the world, SHTF scenario Violent, aggressive "zombies" Survivalists Guns Charlton Heston A pretty entertaining movie, although since it was made in 1971, it seems a little dated now. Did anyone else like it? Meant to add a link www.dvddrive-in.com/reviews/n-s/omegaman1971.htm |
Minus the "machine gun" part... but less than $400! |
|
I dont think it's dated at all, if you look at it from a culture-war point of view. Heston's the consummate Western man who revels and cherishes western civilization and its fruits, and the zombies hate and fear everything Western civilization stands for. They want to destroy the dangerous "Creature of the Wheel". Spend some time in the humanities and social science departments of your local university, and you'll see what I mean. |
I'm serious. Watch The Omega Man again, from the point of view the zombies are post-modernists, deconstructionalists, etc. |
That's a good point. There is definitely a deeper message there. It can still make some valid points. |
No no - you misunderstand. I completely agree with your premise. I just don't want to spend time with those people at the other end of campus |
| The movie is loosely based on the book "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. In the book the hero is the last of the normal humans. All others are vampires. This is the result of a plague virus that spread through the world. However he discovers that some of them are true vampires. The vampirism is caused by a virus that lives off of it's host. It consumes the blood cells, so in order to stay alive the host must consume blood to replace what was eaten by the virus. This way the virus lives also. Entertaining book with a very unexpected ending. Hence the title "I Am Legend". |
I just read a few weeks ago that they actually started production but had to shut down because of budget problems. Whatever that means. I was looking foward to a remake but think Mel Gibson or Harrison Ford would be better than Arnie.

To be fair to astro, we are talking about a 30 year old movie here. But again, to be fair to you, he could have read your fucking post when you said you hadn't seen it yet. Still, even knowing the ending, it's a good flick. |
| I can't believe no one has mentioned that it's one of the first movies where a night vision device, albeit a infrared scope with IR illuminator (circa M2 carbine era), was used in a movie to engage the enemy. Also, I never looked at graham crackers the same way again after seeing it. |

Great Heston line. "Build coffins. That's all you'll need." "Your move Imperator" And the jive-ass with the afro. "Either kill 'em or cure 'em." A great movie. Part of Heston's great late-60s/early-70s sci-fi trilogy, "Planet of the Apes", "Omega Man" and "Soylent Green". |
Hey, asshole, you ruined the ending. How would you like it if you went to a movie theater to see a movie you've been wanted to see for awhile, and then I busted in and shouted out the ending? You wouldn't like it. So fuck off, asshat. |
I have the "Last man on Earth" 4 buck DVD! "The Omega Man" is based on the Richard Matheson book "I am Legend" You can find it H E R E on Amazon. For those interested in the proposed $200 million Arnold epic that was never made.... H E R E is the 1995 script by Mark Protosevich |
Yeah, It was a BAR. His house...is my dreamhome, lucky SOB... |
