There is a gentleman at my father's office that he's known for many years that is a World War II veteran –– Bill Webster. He retired from the Air Force Reserves back in the 1960s as a brigadier general.
When he was just a Lt. during WWII, he flew a bomber and was actually shot down twice –– and lived to tell the story. He recently received these actual photographs from a bombing raid he participated in during the war. The ships are Japanese tankers and/or freighters. He had never seen these photographs until this week..... says that they came in LOW flying in formation and the two planes to his immediate left were shot down. In the photograph of the men on the ground by their plane, Webster is the one standing. He was 22 years old at the time of the raid...."and trying to get to 23." Thought ya'll might enjoy seeing these.

Can't help myself here, I'll just have to say it outright.
Today the Sergeant Major or some colonel would have a cow seeing his people looking scruffy like that. I guess the pictures were taken back in the day when the guys actually knew what they were there for. |
