ar15 h buffer:

Norm wear on edges? About 2K down the tube.

Tagged for interest. Though, that looks like on 5 occasions it slammed against the retaining pin. At a wild guess, I'd say that happened during dis assembly/cleaning, rather than during firing.

Those deep dents are not normal In my experience.

My buffer looks like a squirrel chewed along all the edges however but nothing that deep

mine doesn't look anything like that. about 3k round count. spikes t2 buffer.

Looks like the bolt carrier is not making contact with the buffer at the farthest forward part of the cycling (while in battery).
When the rearward motion starts it's hitting the buffer rather than riding it which causes the wearing on the face.
Then when the buffer is on the forward motion it's banging the retaining pin.

Been shooting ARs/M16s since 1982, I have never seen dings like that on a buffer. Some of the wore out POSs we were issued at ITS at Geiger were pretty bad off too.

I've never seen that on beat to shit M-16's. It is either smacking the retaining pin super hard or it was cast from Asian pot metal.

It appears to have smacked the buffer retainer pin a few times. That's either really soft aluminum (other?), or the buffer somehow smacked the pin really fookin' hard a few times. Not sure how.

Who made your bolt carrier? I'm almost wondering if it's a hair too short? The rest of the buffer (where the BC hits it) doesn't look as chewed up as I'm used to seeing.

Then again, I don't often pay that close attention to it.

If the buffer hit the retaining pin that hard, it would shear the pin.

It is probably caused by the upper or carrier striking the buffer when you close it.

Any corresponding marks on the upper or rear of the carrier?

Id almost think that damage was done prior to the rifle being used / built.

There is simply not enough force in the buffer spring to cause that, and if there was it would elongate the hole for / shear the retainer

BCM H buffer. I've used the same complete lower and slapped on a few uppers that I've built over the past few months.

All of mine are pristine, even after heavy use. Only the silicone rubber plug eventually starts to wear down.

that's not from slamming in to the retaining pin, something would break if that was the case. I'm thinking you are slamming the upper shut on it

I have had an out of spec Mag Tactical lower that had the buffer retaining detent hole in the wrong spot allowing the buffer to beat the snot out of the retainer. Had those marks all the way around after the first day shooting it.

With the rear of the BC sticking out a smidge, maybe? Because fully seated, I still don't see how that's happening. And you think you'd know/hear/feel it when you tried slamming the upper shut.

what kind of lower do you have? i saw a poly lower disintegrate at a class one day, the retaining pin somehow sheared off and caused major issues. buffer had a ding in it like that but only one, and the bcg had obviously made contact with metal as well. we almost weren't able to get that gun disassembled.

Yes positive. I put about 2K rounds through this lower before I cleaned it today. Ive had multiple uppers on it so Im not sure how to approach it.

Out of the three uppers, two have Daniel Defense BCGs and the third is an Aim Surplus Nitride BCG. The Aim surplus BCG upper was fired for the first time this past weekend.
