| Well after 21 years as a JBT and no desire to go into any form of security work I am looking at getting all of my welding certs. Can anyone shed light on the career field. I know it's not a glamorous job and will be either very hot or cold depending on the weather. Can any of you truly give any insight into the career field. The school I spoke with has a contract with a company out of Pascagoula, MS for a Navy ship building contract, so job placement is very good. What says GD? |

I've done some welding and enjoyed it. Sounds like a solid plan. Here's what Mike Rowe says about it:

Don't really know what to say. Just put your time in and learn as much as you can. Don't be one of those "good 'nuff" shit bags, always try to improve your weld quality. It'll help when you go to find a new job because chances are your first weld job is going to be in a shit hole. STAY OUT OF TRAILER SHOPS. I worked in one and it was full of thieving scum bags and was dangerous work. Working a ship yard is probably stick welding. Try to find yourself a nice fab shop that's climate controlled. When people brag about doing the job for 25 years, chances are they haven't been doing it "right" for 25 years.
edit: If you don't mind working outside you can make good money welding pipe in the oil field. |
