I just bought a Fujifilm FinePix E510.  It was being clearanced for $230 with a $30 Target giftcard added on top of that.  Did I do OK?

5.2 megapixels
3.2 Optical
3.9 Digital
16MB xD-picture card (I also bought a 56MB card before I left the store).

I'm no camera/photography guru.  I typically use disposable 35mm cameras and an old point n' click 35mm.

ETA - you're going to need a LOT more memory then that.  Check newegg or bensbargains

You mean 64MB right?

ETA:  Fuji makes a fine camera too.  I bought one for my wife now it stays with me

"Yah, I'll be wiring it with 12-3, 12-4 ... you know." </mr. mom>

I bought the biggest one Target had at the time.  I think it was 64.

Go to Fry's or get online and order you a 1GB memory card.  It's about $90 now and you'll be thanking me later.

No, it's a fine camera.  I have an A330 and it's an awesome camera.  It's only 3.3 megapixels and takes nice quality pics.

It'll be a fine choice for family snapshots and such ...

+1 on getting a 1GB memory card if you can ... you take a lot more pictures when it's digital, since there's no film to develop.

Forget about the digital zoom. Using digital zoom makes your pictures look like crap. If you can't get your shot within the range of the Optical zoom, move closer. As a matter of fact if there's a way to disable the digital zoom, I'd reccomend you do so, and forget that the camera even has it.

Learn how to use the software to resize your images down to something reaonable (sayy 600-800 pixels wide tops) before posting them on Afrcom ... Nobody wants to have to scroll right 5 times to see the picture

ZipZoomFly.com has really good prices on memory cards.  You need at LEAST 256MB for a 5MP camera in my opinion.  I currently have 512MB in the camera and a 256MB spare ready to go.  For a long trip even that's not enough so I will probably get another 512MB card.

BTW, I agree on disabling the digital zoom.  Only turn it on when you REALLY need it.  I bought a stabilized 12X optical zoom camera for that reason.

Cool.  Thanks Gang.

Under optional accessories they have:

Tele Conversion Lens TL-FXE01
Wide Conversion Lens WL-FXE01
Adapter Ring AR-FXE01

Are any of these worth tracking down and purchasing?

I assume they would be better zoom lens, wide angle lens, and the adapter to attach them.

They work OK.  That is the camera on my desk at work.  I bang it around in a briefcase and it takes fairly nice pics without much effort.

The Nikon on my desk two inches from me is much nicer, but more $$$.

Take pics and enjoy!!

64 M is good for a 2Mpix camera.  If you are taking flash pics, you probably have about as much memory as you have battery.  IE, don't get one without the other!

Couple of links to read:

Steve's Digicam review of the E510

Another linked from the first review

The first review was from 10 months ago, so it's a little old, but looks like a fine camera, I am sure you will enjoy it!

You ought to see if your local colleges have an evening class in Digital Photography.  I think you would get a lot out of that.

If you don't already have it, I would reccomend getting Photoshop Elements 3.0.  They have it at Sam's for $78, or it's about $99 at some other places I have seen it.  I would say what you do in the computer after you take the photo is sometimes almost as important as the photo itself and can make average photos good ones.  The camera probably comes with some sort of softwate, but Photoshop is the industry standard and Elements is hard to beat, it will be money well spent.  Buy it.

I had a FinePIx 2650, and the only problem that I had with it was the LCD display. That went completely south about 18 months after I had bought the camera. Otherwise it was an awesome camera. I have no idea how comparable to the E510 it is (the 2650 is only 2 megapixel), but $230.00 is a great price for what you got. Enjoy!

btw - the fair was great and I got a pic of your little ones face painting with my new Olympus C-60!

I finally got a chance to open the package and the memory card.  The camera's pretty cool.  The  additional memory card is a 256MB.

I'll post a few pics when I find hepcat's thread on posting pictures...

If a kind hearted team member could post the link I'd appreciate it.
