looking to get a netbook for the truck for work. my question is, this is basically a standard laptop just compact? still runs a standard windows and everything, like it will come with windows and everything, i can load programs onto it. etc etc? or are netbooks STRICTLY surfing machines only? just may be the dumbest question of the night. |

yes if you mean a small standard laptop with out a CD/DVD drive from 2002. Edit: not knocking netbooks to get the small size and battery life the components are really slow compared to any recent computer. For work it would depend on what you need it to do write a novel i would have to say get a laptop but just to type in load information and stuff like that then it shouldn't be a problem. Also you wont be playing any games on it. |

Netbooks are indeed just small laptops with no optical drive (CD/DVD). However they pretty much all use Intel Atom processors, which are weak, and have very limited video capability. They are fantastic for web surfing, word processing (provided you get one with a good keyboard) and general low resource consuming tasks. You can also get ultra-compact notebooks the same size with much better performance, but they are $1K+. |

Yep, they run Windows and are just like a normal laptop. The biggest difference between the netbooks is the way the keyboard and trackpad are laid out. Wouldn't do much more than surf and e-mail on them.
Unless you absolutely need something compact, I usually steer my users to www.dell.com/outlet to get a refurbished laptop. |

this will be mounted and usually kept in my truck for this up coming season, will probably run a quickbooks and another program for logging my route and other information, other then that i want to keep it basic so it is reliable. i just dont want to spend the money and a full size laptop or give up that kind of room in my regular cab truck. i see on ebay i can get a refurb on for under 3 bills. kinda what im looking to spend. |

I am on mine right now. I use in more than my regular laptop.
Mine has widows 7 starter, witch is ok but you cant change the wallpaper
I added a gig of ram and it runs well. I regularly open 10 or so web pages, and run itunes. My daughter and me just finished watch The Book of Eli on it also. |

Quoted: There's quite a few netbooks out there that are more powerful than the PC i'm using to post on arfcom right now. The big issue is ram, microsoft doesn't like companies to put more than 1gb in them for some reason. I don't think it's microsoft, actually. I think the companies making them would rather save a few pennies on RAM and have them run slower so that they don't steal market share from their higher priced notebook lines. |

Alot of linux laptops do have 2gb stock. What I was told was that on XP based netbooks, microsoft had allowed companies to use XP (which MS was schedule to stop all support to either this year or last year) under the condition they used only 1gb of ram in it. I think the point is/was that XP is darn fast with 1gb and with 2gb even more so. |
