I need a program to download that'll let me do screen caps from DVD's and be able to catch and edit audio files to make things like ring tones or messenger notifications.  Preferably free.  Thanks.

never tried using a prog for screen caps, I just use the Prt Scrn button, and then paste into Photoshop. As far as the audio goes. Try Adobe Audition. Don't know if it will work but it's a hell of a program anyways. .02 worth

I use a program called GoldWave to record streaming audio.

Anything coming out of your speakers gets recorded.

hence, if you are recording audio from a movie,
and your computer says "you've got mail"
It will record it too.

This used to be easy, now it's a pain in the ass. Probably the easiest way now is to aim a handycam at the PC screen. In particular--some online/streaming video is made to be really difficult to grab on purpose.

I use WisdomeSoft's AutoScreen Recorder Free for getting screen grabs, it may or may not work for your purposes depending on the DVD-player program you use. And the free version doesn't record sound either.
----
For the sound, if you have a Creative soundcard, the standard Creative mixer will allow this if the input is set to "system mixer" or "what U hear", whichever of the two is available.

I have a Creative soundcard so I don't need anything else, but Goldwave or Audacity may work. Microsoft has taken steps to block this sort of copying so you have to try different stuff until you find one that works. What often helps is if you first rip the DVD to your computer's hard-drive using a decrypting program and play that rather than the actual disk, so that the DVD-content you are playing is "unprotected".

.....Sometimes (with older PC setups) FRAPS may work, for both the video and sound at once. FRAPS is a free screen+audio recording program that is intended for recording in-game movies while playing games. Most Windows games are projected in DirectX video APIs, and FRAPS is made for capturing that type of video (the clipboard isn't, the clipboard will just show you a "black rectangle" where the DVD screencap should be) but FRAPS doesn't make any attempts to defeat copy-protection, as games aren't protected this way.

Total Recorder is the name of one premium program for grabbing "protected" audo, but it isn't free.
-------
Afterwards, you will have a AVI movie file with no sound, and a sound file. GO to Doom9.org and there you can download free video editing tools that will allow you to recombine the sound with the video, into an [AVI with sound].

PowerDVD can do DVD screen grabs.
