I noticed that my a/c hasn't been running as nicely as it should be, and I went and looked at the system. I noticed that the freon lines have ice on them about 1" deep, and the coils (I think) are also completely iced over.  My better half has already called the home warranty company, and they're contacting a service company.  I was wondering what it is that causes this situation.  Thanks

Usually, ice on the evaporator (and attached lines) is caused by a low Freon charge.

In all likelihood, you have a slow leak.

Low Freon or your condenser coils are filled with dirt cause you never sprayed em down with a garden hose to keep them clean.

Actually, I spray them down once a month.

Actually icing can be caused by several things:

1. Low on Freon
2. Dirty EVAPORATOR COIL (that's the one upstairs)
3. Dirty Filters
4. Indoor fan motor cutting off for various reasons ( going bad, over amping, etc etc)

Watch the service guy closely to see how he repairs it.

high humidity inside the house when you turned it on?  was your inside houde temp low to begin with?

Shut off the system- let the ice melt (might need hot water/fan or something) then try again.

mine has done this once or twice- just let it thaw and she worked fine- but might not work for ya.

check air flow too-filters
