Never try to see too much at one time.
I'd fly to Ronald Reagan and see the capital (Smithsonian), then start working your way south through Virginia. Shenandoah Valley (Skyline Drive) is beautiful. The deer wouldn't get off the road and I had to drive around them (that's how safe they feel). Plenty of Civil War sites and some American Revolutionary War sites (Yorktown). From Skyline Drive, you can swing east and see Appomattox, Sayler's Creek, Yorktown, Petersburg, and then south into North Carolina and South Carolina. Going south from Petersburg, I'd go to Bentonville (last Civil War battle in the East) and then inland. In South Carolina, the sites I like are Cowpens, Fort Ninety-Six, Charleston (visit Patriot Point, Fort Moultrie, the Battery (sea walk by tip of Charleston - your wife will love it). Then through Georgia and back home. |
