I've been trying various flavors of Linux, and I like xubuntu.  However, due to a motherboard problem, I connect to my DSL modem via USB.  None of the Linux live CD's recognize my connection, and I can't figure out how to set it up.  If it's not above my paygrade, can some kind person tell me what I need to do, or point me to a good source of info?  I don't see anything on the various dumb Linux user sites.
Thanks much,
matthew

ETA:  Sorry, not clear that my on-board ethernet is dead, dead, dead.  I'll try the card.

If your modem uses ethernet, just get a PCI ethernet NIC. They start at $3.99 from Newegg.com.

The modem USB connection is probably a usb ethernet adapter or similar. Linux supports many of them but it may not be recognizing that specific one. It recommended to use the ethernet connection from the modem to the computer. Most computers have a built in ethernet connection, if not, they are cheap. Get like a linksys or dlink card.

+ eleventy billion. This is the easiest solution. You could try hunting drivers for your particular modem, but without being able to use the modem in the first place....

When the modem is plugged in see if you have anything under /dev/sda*, where sda* should be sda1, sda2, sda3, etc...
