I'm writing my first paper for English Comp I, and of course it will be covering the virtuses of the 2nd Ammendment. What I need is any links to articles or resources to find some stats, quotes, facts and etc. to show that gun control, AWB and such are a bad idea. Thanks for the help.

search for quotes from founding fathers- lots of them were gun nuts.

just googled; found this site: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp
don't know if its any good.  seems to have some good figures without too much comentary.

realize statistics are mostly lies.  they can be made to give any result and support whatever you want, so take them with a grain of salt and don't claim to "win" the arguement based off of a statistic.

Here are some notes I used for an article awhile back.

1.Federal Court of Appeals, 10-16-2001, U.S. v. Emerson

A)“The plain meaning of the right of the people to keep arms is that of an individual, rather than a collective, right and is not limited to keeping arms while engaged in active military service or as a member of a select militia such as the National Guard… We conclude that (United States v.) Miller (the legal precedent by which the court considered Emerson) does not support the (Clinton Administration’s) collective rights or sophisticated collective rights approach to the Second Amendment.”

B)“There is no evidence, in the text of the Second Amendment, or any other part of the Constitution, that the words ‘the people’ connotation within the Second Amendment than when employed elsewhere in the Constitution.   In fact the text of the Constitution, as a whole, strongly suggests the words ‘the people’ have precisely the same meaning within the Second Amendment as without.”

C)We have found no historical evidence that the Second Amendment was intended to convey militia power to the states, limit the federal government’s power to maintain a standing army, or applies only to members of a select militia while on active duty.  All of the evidence indicates that the Second Amendment, like other parts of the Bill of Rights, applies to and protects individual Americans.  We find that…it protects the individual rights of Americans to keep and bear arms whether or not they are a member of a select militia or performing active military service or training.”

2.Richard Poe, The Seven Myths of Gun Control: Reclaiming the Truth About Guns, Crime, And the Second Amendment.  Roseville CA: Prima Publishing, 2001
A)Australia and England-Guns banned all but for specialized hunting outings
         i)Australia-1997-1999-murders up 6.5%, attempted murders 12.5%
ii)Assault, kidnapping and armed robberies also increased
iii)England ranks 2nd in industrialized nations in violent crime
iv)In one six month period in 2000, street crime in London was up 32% over the previous year.
         v)Poe, 94-103

B)US is not even in the top 10 most violent countries in the world
i)Last 20 years we have added almost 70 million guns and RTC states have doubled to 37
ii)More guns since 1991, yet violent crime down 35%, to a 30 year low, murder down 43%, rape down 22%, ag assault down 28% and robbery down 47%
    iii)Poe, 18-22

3.Gregg Jackson, Conservative Comebacks To Liberal Lies.  Ramsey, NJ. JAJ Publishing, 2007
A)DC ban on handgun sales led to a tripling of the murder rate by the early 1990’s w/ hand guns being used to commit most of those murders

4.National Archive of Criminal Justice Data, Chicago Homicide Dataset: Homicides in Chicago, 1965-1995  http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NACJD/SDA/chd95d.html
A)1982 Chicago banned handguns (illegally it turns out) and the murder rate doubled.

5.NRA, Fable IV, <http://www.nraila.org/issues/articles/read.aspx?id=209&issue=023>
A)California has increased waiting periods, outlawed “assault” rifles, subjected rifles and shotguns to the 10 day waiting period, made every purchaser give thumbprints and submit to a background check, as well as having every gun purchased registered and requiring hand gun purchasers to pass a safety test.  However, since 1975 our annual murder rate has been 32% higher than the rest of the country.

6.Jackson
A)“The only thing that has reduced violent crime has been strict law enforcement for criminals.  From 1980 to 1994, the ten states with the greatest increases in prison population experienced an average decrease of 13% in violent crime.  The ten states with the smallest increase in prison populations experienced an average 55% increase in violent crime.”
B)Virginia’s Project Exile-a federal, state and local effort led by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Richmond- sentenced felons convicted of illegally possessing guns to a minimum of five years in prison.  Following enactment of Project Exile, Richmond’s firearm murder rate dropped nearly 40%.”

7.John R. Lott. More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws. University of Chicago Press, 1997, P.50-96
A)Allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons deters violent crimes and it appears to produce no increase in accidental deaths.  If those states who don’t have right to carry concealed gun provisions had adopted them in 1992, approximately 1,570murders, 4,177rapes and over 60,000 aggravated assaults would have been avoided yearly.”
B)“For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect, the murder rate declines by 3%, rape by 2% and robberies by over 2%.”
C)“…the effect is especially pronounced for women.  An additional woman carrying a concealed handgun reduces the murder rate for women by three to four times more than an additional man carrying a concealed handgun reduces the rate for men.”

8.National Center for Health Statistics, deaths per 100,000 people

B)Motor vehicles—16.3
C)Falls—5.6
D)Poisonings—3.6

F)Fires—1.4

B)20, 823 people killed from falls
