1980 Toyota truck 4x4 transmission or clutch problem.  It will shift just fine when the engine is off, but once it is running it will hardly go into 2nd and first is a joke.  Very hard to shift into second unless moving and I have to start off in second now.  3rd and 4th are like normal.  I know the transmission is fluid is good as I filled it last week before the problem started.  Master cylinder was a little low but not to even the minimum mark yet.  Problem just started today.  Please help!  Only car and no money for a mechanic right now!

Are you sure you topped off with the correct fluid? The type of problem you are having can be caused by improper fluid. On modern vehicles there is no such thing as a universal transmission fluid.

yeah, I'm sure the fluid is right.  I double checked the manual and it was the same bottle I filled from before.  I have a bottle of different weight (differential) but it is unopened.  I think it is because of a broken linkage pin.  I just dug into it a little, it is a really weird setup, but the shift lever moves side to side and in ovals while in gear and the little pin bends and twists with it.  Hopefully that is the only problem, but I have no idea how to fix it.

I would suggest looking real hard at the linkage. I also seem to recall older Toyota trucks having issues with shifter bushings, as I recall they are fairly cheap and easy to replace. Tranny/clutch problems are really kind of tough to diagnose long distance though. It seems to me that I use intuition and feel on a road test more than anything else when working on a manual tranny.

Thanks Lightning.  I am going to look at the linkage more in the next couple days.  Fortunately I get to borrow a vehicle for a little while.  Of course it would die when finals are next week!

Lighting, the shift lever doesn't connect directly down into the transmission, there is a linkage that goes down beside it, then another dust boot then it seems to connect to the transmission.  I can't seem to find any info on this type of set up, any idea where I or what I might search under for more info?  Searches so far haven't turned up anything that looks remotely similar to what I have.

It being an 80 model may make it an older design than what I am used to (when it comes to toyota trucks, the oldest I have seen much of are mid eighties). I would look at all of the bars and pins on the linkages, it would be very helpful to have somebody moving the shifter while you are watching. What you want to look for are bent bars, anythign loose or wobbly. If you can find a manual I would look for where the bushing at the base of the shifter goes. A long time ago I repaired a Toyota 4X4 that he bushing had dompletely disintegrated, there was no sign of it left.

Okay, I think it is called a side actuated shifter if that helps at all.  The pin that holds the shifter in is very wobbly, but I can't seem to get anything behind it to pry it out.  I could disconnect it from the bottom by cutting a piece of wire and removing a bolt.  Would this be a good thing to do or not?  To fully remove the shifter I would also have to remove two bolts that go into the side of the tranny.  Again, is this a good idea?  Will keep trying to get the pin out.  Updates to follow

ETA: I have a haynes manual, but there is nothing in it about the shifter bearing or disassembly that matches my set up

if it works fine with the engine off and won't go while running the clutch is hanging up and not  fully disengaging.  1st and reverse are not synchonized but the others are.  that is why it will go into second the syncro is slowing the input down and allowing it to go it gear.  if hydralic clutch possible master/slave problem but more likely a pressure plate gone bad.  just my desk chair diagnosis.

BTH out

Thanks for more input rogue.  Hopefully it will get looked at/fixed tomorrow.  I know the guy that I bought it from replaced the master cylinder for the clutch, but until friday it was all working fine, except for the past week, it ground a lot going into reverse.  Anyone have any idea on how much this might cost?
