Here's a curiosity question for you...

I buy through a couple local shops.  What is the retention period for the form 4473?  Is it kept on file permanently?  Does it get forwarded to the Feds?  Does it get destroyed after a period of time?  What happens to this thing?

Really don't know.... thanks in advance for the info.

4473 are kept at the FFL's location until they no longer have a license then they get sent to the ATF, I believe.

stays on file at the shop until they give up the business, which then it all goes to the atf.

atf can also inspect a dealers forms, and make copies for use in investigations.

Kept on file at the shop until shop goes out of business, then sent to Feds.  Feds may come in and make copies of forms for "investigative" purposes.

Correct, but the dealer can destroy any 4473 that is older than 20 years and never be obliged to give a copy to the ATF.

Shop is allowed to destroy after 20 yrs. Don't know how often they actually do this.

If they go out of business all of them go to ATF.

So as long as I never sell a gun that's on a 4473, they will always know I have it

Sure, there's no registration.

i am under the impression the 4473 is registration, i mean if i buy a gun at a shop its registered to me right? also is it illegal to buy a gun without the atf knowing? say a friend sells me his, do i report it?

no its not registration. And yes, you can buy a gun from your friend without reporting anything, hand him money, he hands you gun. Its called a Face to face sale. As long as you are both in the same state. Its good to go.
