So I went to my first interview today.  It was an interview with just the Cheif of the agency not a board.  It was kinda of a pre-background check deal.  Everything was going fine untill we got to the end of the interview and I realized that I had answered one of the questions untruthfully.  The question was

"Have you, within the past 5 years been, committed any criminal offense?"

Well originally I said no, but then I remembered about two years ago I had taken some booze to a party where there was a minor, and yes the minor did drink a couple.  But he mostly drank what he brought himself.  So when we got to the last question I told the Cheif that I had forgotten about the event and would like to change my answer to the question above.  He stated that this could change the answer to a couple of questions, mostly about morals.  He never changed any of the answers to the questions.  We proceded to have some paperwork notorized and he told me to try and have my F3 form back to him tomarrow at which point we shook hands and I left.

What I'm wandering now is how bad is this going to affect my chances of getting a job with this agency?  Is it pretty serious or was he just trying to rattle me with his comment about morals???  There's 5 of us trying for this position 3 of which I went thru BLET with I hope that this doesn't affect their decision to badly.

if thats all that you've done wrong you should be fine. as long as you let him know the omission was an honest mistake.

It was honest mistake and you corrected it. The Chief didn't change the answers to your interview questions. I think your good to go. Police departments are more concerned with trustworthyness over minor infractions. Everybody makes mistakes, its not the mistakes it how you deal with them.

You did good. Good Luck with the rest of the process and keep us posted on your progress.

Quoted:

What the hell kind of question is this?

Have you been committed any criminal offense?  Was that supposed to read convicted of a criminal offense?

Were you convicted of anything or did you simply volunteer that you like to give booze to underage drinkers at house parties?

Seriously, was the question as you wrote it above?

The question was have you COMMITTED any criminal offense.  And no I wasn't charged because I wasn't caught and I didn't know the kid was underage until after it happened.  The reason I told the chief the information was because I didn't want that to come up on the polygraph or in other interviews then have him wander why I wasn't truthful before.  I did assure him that it was completely unintentional that I left it out when he first ask the question.

Update:  I turned in my F3 form today and he started the background check on me and gave me a waiver to sign so that I could do a ride along with the dept.  so I don't think that it hurt my chances that bad.
