Since I spent Saturday and part of Sunday in the hospital due to a-fib making a renewed appearance in my heart the wife grounded me from working in the garage today. 
So to sort of thumb my nose at her I grabbed the AMX speedo and brought it in the house.  I could tell something was worn out after 50 years but wasn't sure exactly what was worn. The only thing that was designed to be removed was the odometer. The rest of the speedo was assembled with rivets. The face was held on with two brass rivets painted black. I carefully filed off the back of the rivets and popped them out. You can see in this picture that I have removed the one on the left.
With the face removed you can see a bit more but still can't see what is worn out. I removed the odometer by lifting the spring clip on the left side and I carefully pulled the hairspring assembly from the shaft. Then I filled off the two rivet head holding the upper bracket in place.  Next I separated the upper bracket from the main housing. and removed the remaining parts. 
The small off white bushing/bearing (in the center of the picture) appears to be the problem. I'm going machine a new bushing/bearing from Teflon and one from Nylon. I'll then decide which works best. I'l will drill and tap where the rivets were in the main housing with some small screws. This will allow me to take it apart easily if things need attention. I'll uses some small screws and nuts to hold the face on as they are not seen when the unit is installed in the cluster. I'll post pics of the assembly process in the next few weeks. Now I'm off to my Dr. for a follow up and referral to a cardio Dr.

The odometer is ready for assembly. I've cleaned everything up and applied instrumentation grease to the nylon gears.
I fabricated a replacement bearing/bushing and installed it. I made it an interference fit and pressed it into place. The speed cup was then inserted into the bearing/bushing. There was a special barb that holds the speed cup in place inside the bearing/bushing that isn't visible. The bearing/bushing also holds the hair spring in place. The hair spring returns the needle to zero and also gives the appropriate resistance when the speed cup is spinning . 
Here you can see one of the holes that I drilled and tapped along with one of the screws installed on the right side. 
Both screws installed along with the odometer. 
Finally the face is installed along with the needle.

Making steady progress on getting things together.
This is the aftermarket Lokar transmission dip stick assembly. The firewall bracket they included didn't set the tube far enough from the fire wall so I fabbed up a custom mount that used two existing holes on the firewall. You can also see the new heater valve and hose in place. 
Exhaust manifolds installed along with plugs and wires. I've got to get the proper looms for the plug wires. 
Proper alternator installed along with v-belt 
Fuel Pump installed 
Throttle and kick down linkage installed. I had to fabricate the kick down linkage as the factory linkage wasn't long enough for the Edelbrock carb. 
Transmission cross member and mount installed. 
Custom shortened drive line with appropriate yoke and new u-joints installed. 
I got the vacuum lines and PCV stuff installed along with a ton of little stuff that didn't warrant pictures. |

Finally found a picture of one of the 2 AMX's this guy owns.
He bought this one brand new and has been racing it ever since.

Getting closer to firing the AMX up. Got the new radiator installed and the new fuel tank arrived today. I need to remove the filler neack from the old tank and install it on the new tank. I'm not trilled with the nice paint runs on the tank but that side will be hidden once it is installed. On another note I saw the cardiologist today. The plan for now is to control the A-fib with meds and revisit things if the meds cause side affects or fail to control it.

Still waiting on three items. A new grill, the trans cooling lines and the fuel line from the pump to the carb. The trans and fuel lines are all that are preventing me from starting the car. I got the new Cooper Tires mounted this morning. I want to get some American Racing Torque Thrust wheels but I still have to pay the hospital for my last stay so the wheels will have to wait a bit.

Well this may be my last post as The AMX is complete. I got the new dual exhaust and front end alignment taken care of Monday and Tuesday. I preped and painted the grill and finished up installing it this morning. Took her for her maiden voyage since everything is complete. I've got some tuning and adjustments to make but things are coming to a close on the build. Took a cruise by the park and shot some pics. Thanks for all the interest in my thread while it's only 5 pages long there are over 18K views which is pretty dang cool!

It looks awesome! Missed it at the Swiss Day event today. No AMC's there at all. I want to see a smokey burn out vid and some road test reports. After the Doc gets paid we will have to see the new shoes on it. Take care of your ticker. Don't need another ARF doc thread.

Something is not correct and it looks as if the engine is going to need to be torn down. I didn't do the original rebuild and now it's biting me in the ass. Replacing the worn parts with OEM stuff isn't correcting the problem it's making it worse.
