my friend has one made by Gerber, and it is fucking awesome, let me see if I can find a link.

eta:  http://www.gerber-tools.com/Gerber-Multi-Plier-600-Blunt-Nose-Black-07520G.htm

I think it's this one. It's awesome because you don't have to flip it all around to get at the damn pliers, they just slide out the end and lock into place.

Get a $6 el cheapo model, figure out what you like and don't like, use and don't use, and could do without or absolutely have to have. After you figure that out(cheapo should be beat to shit by now), buy a $20-$30 gerber or leatherman, and see how long it lasts.

Then you will know exactly what multitool you want.

Yes I would also look at Leatherman, my dad found one in the bushes at work about 5 years ago, cleaned it up and uses it to this day and loves it.

Leatherman Charge Ti. I have had one for a couple of years now and carry it daily. I had a Gerber, carried it for a couple of months, threw it in a drawer and haven't seen it since. As always YMMV.

Gerber Suspension.  You can open the blades without flipping the handles out and it's a great value/quality for $30.

Have to say leatherman even though thier politics suck.

Bought a SOG & it broke w/out much effort.  The knobs on the assisted opening system flew off.

SOG will repair it under warranty but really not impressed at all. Pretty sure the same thing will happen again.

Oh, the little guard over the tools fell off as well but it was not critical; to it's operation.

Used the Gerber with the pliers that come out of the end.

Quit using it after getting tired of having my fingers pinched when the pliers slid off of something and the handles closed.

Got a SOG Paratool and haven't looked back.

This one is very nice.  I like that the tools can be accessed without opening the pliers:

Bought a USED Pocket PowerPlier for $15 at the state auction house. I use it everyday, and put it through some pretty harsh torture and it's as good as when I bought it. Everything has bad examples (and good examples for equality's sake). I've haven't heard much bad about the SOG series.

It seems that with most brands of multi-tool they feel flimsy. Esp the "deluxe" versions. I have half a dozen gerbers. (Gifts, army issued, etc...) and they're alright but my diesel just puts a bad taste for the name gerber in my mouth. I have seen the same thing with most of the leathermen, although they're built better than the gerbers. But still, all the SOGs I've held have just felt bombproof. (plus you can swap tools or replace them as they wear out, leatherman doesn't do that)

I wouldn't give that rat-bastard Tim Leatherman the time of day. Even though I own many of his tools, my days of buy one are over. I suggest buying a tool from one of his competitors.

Another vote here for the Victorinox swisstool.  Some people will complain that their tools are too highly polished and can slip out of screws, for example, but I have never had a problem with any of mine.  One lives in my truck, one in my range bag, and one stays at work.

I've owned leatherman, gerber, etc, but the Vic's have replaced them all.

I have a Gerber 600 Pro Scout and love it. Love the one handed opening for the pliers.

That said, it's best to examine the Gerbers in a store so you can read the packaging. Some are chinese and some are US, some are a combination.

Mine said "Made in USA from USA and chinese parts"

You might be amused, yet outraged, if you researched his (Leatherman's) comments regarding this.  "Unapologetic" is putting it mildly.  It was more along the lines of, "If you don't like my politics, tough shit."  One is truly feeding our enemies $$ if you buy his stuff.

Columbia is another company that used to be "the best" when it came to outdoor clothing.  Now they barely make anything in camo, due to being boycotted by outdoorsmen.  "Mother Gert" is a Commie bitch.

Agreed.  I have a Leatherman but it was a gift from my dad so I couldn't get rid of it.

My main multitool is a Gerber.

Have a Gerber Diesel ridin' my belt as we speak- I use it almost every day. Plus, the pouch is big enough for me to carry a jump drive and an Extron "tweaker" with it.

I used to have a Leatherman Wave, but the blade broke on it. Soon after my MIL gave me the Diesel for Xmas, and I've never looked back.

I used to swear by my Leatherman Wave, but since Tim Leatherman endorsed Kerry as the President/CEO of Leatherman tools I won't buy another one of his tools.  (I didn't care who *HE* endorsed.  When he did it using his title at Leatherman Tools a lot of us saw it as Leatherman Tools endorsing the candidate.  I won't support companies that openly support a candidate I find offensive.) My replacement which I actually like more is a Victorinox Spirit +.

SOG powerpliers.

Get the black, non EOD model.
Unless you are EOD

The EOD model has a crimp that is excellent at pinchng your hand. It will peirce skin.

It allows you to customize the blade selection, unlike the gerber.

Its tools are better too.

Mine is used enough I can open it like a butterfly knife.

Leatherman Wave.

Though, Mr. Leatherman IS a tool.....

You might check here for some decent reviews of other tools-http://www.multitool.org/

Go out to YOUTUBE for a review of the Gerber Suspension.....NOT very flattering.

Personally don't care for the SOG, the little metal covers on the handles on mine kept coming off-real pain in the ass.

If I couldn't go Leatherman (I NEVER buy them new) I would go Gerber but not the Suspension as noted. The Diesel is a great tool and anything in the 400 and 600 series is good to go.

Those covers make the thing more comfortable when using the compound leverage.
Bend the tabs if they are coming loose. Those parts are crucial.

If you guys want to see the custom modifications done to mine.. I might show you.
I can lock my 1/4" drive and screwdrivers at a 90" angle for hella leverage.

Which review of the Gerber Suspension? What is not flattering about it?

I own a Gerber Ripstop which is a fairly decent tool for the $27 or something I paid for it.

Another one of the Gerber models that I really like is the 400.

Leatherman tools are extremely nice.

Tim is a fuckhead asshole face, but buying tools on ebay is one way to go around about it.
Not a fan of the SOG tools either.

I also haven't held every model, so there may be something in the lineup that would work for me...

but overall I don't like weird shit like their seatbelt cutter
I fucking despise that "feature" SOG puts on everything.

Their tools have the seatbelt cutter, their knife handles have the seatbelt cutter, their knife sheaths have the seatbelt cutter...

fucking failure of a gimmick you morons, enough already.

The Victorinox Swisstool is fucking nice.

It easily ties, if not outright beating out Leatherman in the fit, finish, and feel department.

They're also about 30% more expensive or so, comparably. Further, I don't know how they truly compare in durability.

Fit and finish is great, but that's only one aspect and I'd argue it's not the most important one. Shit has to work and stay together.

I haven't taken the plunge on one of the flagship models yet... I am still undecided on which is "the best" for me.

So far though, I think Victorinox is in the lead... I really do like their stuff and they have all the features I prefer.

For example, scissors are important to me on a tool, and I think Victorinox has the best scissor. Gerber has the worst.

One thing I both like and dislike about the Gerber Ripstop is the size and shape.

It's bulky and arguably ergonomic. I don't know how I feel about this. It's also the heaviest tool I've used.

Speaking of heavy, there are Leatherman tools out there now with plastic handles. I do not like this at all!

They have a sort of thin metal shell over the plastic,  and this makes for a very light tool, and makes it fairly inexpensive too...

but it also makes me lose confidence in it's strength and durability.

Though if a tool being lightweight is one of your top requirements, there ya have it!

End of the day, I think tools are a pretty personal decision.

There is something good to be found from any of these big makers, just depends on your needs.

I find those covers to be kind of a pain in the ass.

The way I see it is they are trying to reinvent the wheel with a stupid design decision.

They put the tools on the wrong side of the handles, then compensated with pain in the ass, always in the way covers.

All it needs now is a retarded seatbelt cutter... oh wait!

SOG has some very weird ideas and I don't find them to be good ones. Overall that's what turns me off on them.

If they'd stop trying to be different they'd sell a lot more shit I think, because for the most part, the quality is there.
